Finance department earns top honors for performance

This year marks the 21st year in a row that Everett Public Schools’ finance department has earned the Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Association of School Business Officials International (ASBO). It is the second year the department has applied for and also earned the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting (CAFR) from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA).

Only eight of the state’s 295 school districts earned the ASBO award this year, and the GFOA honor was given to only five school districts and 65 municipalities in the state for this year. The district’s accuracy and the extent of its fiscal reporting and public accountability are acknowledged by both awards. In particular, the CAFR report far exceeds the minimum reporting standards required of school districts in Washington.

“This commitment of transparency to the community and to our bond issuers results in a cost savings to taxpayers. Because of our lower interest rates, determined in part by our reporting methods and these awards, local taxpayers enjoy lower tax rates on the bonds they so generously approve for schools,” said Jeff Moore, director of finance and budget. Moore also recognized his team as “extraordinary professionals noted around the state for their experience and quality work.”
