District parents invited to preview HIV/AIDS program
Parents interested in reviewing HIV/AIDS program materials used in the district are invited to a review session on Monday,
Jan. 14 from 6-7 p.m. in the Cascade High School library. All student instructional materials will be available for parents to
review and will give families an opportunity for family discussions before classroom presentations begin.
Following a preview of the materials, parents/guardians who wish to have a child excused from participation in a classroom
HIV/AIDS prevention program may sign a release form. State law provides that a parent or guardian must attend such a
meeting before they can have their child or legal ward excused from participation in the school district HIV prevention program.
In 1988 Washington State Legislature mandated schools present HIV/AIDS information to students each year beginning in the
fifth grade. Everett Public Schools has adopted an appropriate program for HIV/AIDS prevention education for students not
enrolled in a health class. Typically, such students are in grades 10-12. Ninth-grade students receive HIV/AIDS prevention
education in their health class.
