What is the action the character takes?

(Text based)
What were the consequences?

(Text based and/or inferred information)
Why did the character

act in this way?

(Text based and/or inferred information)
What flaws were there in the character’s thinking?

Support your answer.
What logical reasons support the choices made?

Support your answer.
Do you agree or disagree with the characters reasoning?

Support your answer.
Does the character’s treatment of the other characters seem fair?

Why or why not?

Squeaky:

She protects Raymond (walks him to school, defends him from verbal remarks from other kids)

She is sensitive to remarks about her and her brother,   especially the ones made by the other girls

She wants to take care of him; she feels it is some how her responsibility

Ø   She did not think that Raymond could take care of himself

Ø   She generalizes about the other girls

She underestimated Raymond’s ability

Opinion:

I agree/disagree…

Agree

Evidence:

Fits of fantasy by Raymond (text example ?)

Disagree:

Evidence:

She needed to focus on her own life and actions. She takes things out on the other girls. (this is a confusing example?)

Judgment:

Yes, it’s fair/ No, it’s not fair…

Fair

Evidence:

The girls are mean and put down Raymond

Unfair

Not all the girls are the same. For example, Gretchen shows that she can be respectful. After the race she smiles.

Step 5: What is the most important conclusion that can be drawn from the selection?
It is important to understand that not all people are the same.
Don’t overlook the capability of others. A person who is disabled can be capable of great things.

Step 6: What would you do in a similar situation? Why?
I would have also taken care of Raymond and would have run the race to the best of my ability. However, I would have been more respectful initially to Gretchen. After all, Squeaky had no reason to be rude or to think lowly of Gretchen. Gretchen did not tease Raymond in the beginning of the story.
