Springtime volunteer opportunities in Everett middle and high schools

When high school students present their senior “Culminating Exhibition,” they are meeting a district graduation requirement. Those presentations are made before a panel of adults who determine whether each presentation is up to standard. “The adult panelists are critical to the process,” emphasizes Jeanne Willard, a district curriculum specialist whose responsibilities include coordinating these important student presentations. “Students shine when they make these presentations, and it is good for them to experience talking before a group of adults who are supportive of students but who do not know the presenters.”

Also each spring in late May, middle school students sit with parents and teachers to reflect upon their middle school learning and plans for high school and beyond. At Evergreen Middle School community panelists are invited to join the conferences as well. Following the planned conference sessions, some students at each of the middle schools will need to schedule a “make-up” conference. “Sometimes the parents are unable to make those conferences because of work schedules or other conflicts. Adult volunteers for the middle school exit experiences help ensure that each student has a caring team of a teacher and an adult to validate what students share and encourage them to pursue their goals for high school,” says Willard.

Dates to volunteer for these middle and high school events begin in late May and extend into early June. “Each experience takes just a part of one day,” clarifies Willard. “It’s a wonderful way to help a student, see how well prepared and capable today’s students are and to visit a school in your neighborhood.”
