Everett schools honor Children's Museum and Bruce Engebretsen
At the annual Washington Association of School Administrators (WASA) Regional 109 awards luncheon on May 17, 2007,
Bruce Engebretsen received Everett Public Schools highest award for an individual – the Student Achievement Leadership
Award. The Community Leadership Award went to Imagine Children's Museum, for the work that organization does to ensure
that all children have access to hands-on learning.
Engebretsen is an active member of the Everett Public Schools Foundation board. He has served on the board for 10 years as
well as serving as president during that time. Associate Superintendent, Instruction Karst Brandsma noted, As a parent,
community businessman, and volunteer, Bruce enthusiastically supports the district mission. And he puts action behinds his
beliefs. He's helped every student learn to high standards by securing funding for all-day kindergarten, summer school tuition
and teacher training opportunities. He also understands the value of recognizing others and has helped with the 25-year
service awards for school staff.
Imagine Children's Museum's Executive Director Nancy Johnson accepted the award on behalf of the museum. In nominating
the museum for the award, Superintendent Carol Whitehead said, The museum is not only a place of learning for children, but
a place where our teachers learn as well. Our teachers especially enjoy the professional development sessions coordinated by
museum staff, and the museum itself is a safe and fun place for adults and children to interact with each other while learning
from those around them. The Imagine Children's Museum is a strong partner with the district in our combined efforts to bring
learning experiences appropriate for all learning levels to this region's children.
Each year the WASA members gathers in regional ceremonies around the state to say thank you to people and organizations
that support public education.
