Information for the 2008-09 School Year
As we begin the 2008-09 school year, we are met with a new Washington State requirement to administer a Visual Arts Classroom Based Performance Assessment (CBPA) in Elementary, Middle and High School. The Washington State OSPI published Visual Arts Assessments are a useful starting place to implement a manageable assessment strategy in the Visual Arts.
Visual Arts Specialists are encouraged to implement revised versions of the OSPI Visual Arts Classroom Based Performance Assessments in common across the district.
Elementary School
Elementary School Visual Arts Specialists will administer an assessment in the form of a visual arts product for Grade 5 Students. This product will be determined collaboratively with the Elementary School Visual Arts Specialists.
Middle School
Middle School Visual Arts Specialists will administer an assessment to Grade 8 students enrolled in art classes. The product for this assessment is a one-point perspective drawing using graphite and color pencil similar to the OSPI assessment Teen Sandwich Hub.
High School
High School Visual Arts Specialists will administer an assessment to students enrolled in the Intro to Art classes. The product for this assessment is an observational portrait of a full face in graphite similar to the OSPI assessment The Perfect Gift.
Scoring
Teachers may score these assessments as they would any other similar assignment in their class.
Timing
The CBPAs are not time-bound. Teachers can determine the most appropriate time to assign the CBPA during the term (trimester, semester or school year).
Grading
Teachers can determine how best to include the CBPA scores into their regular grading system.
Reporting
In order to fulfill the OSPI requirements, teachers will need to report to Allison Larsen the number of students who participate in the CBPA. This report will most likely be accomplished via a simple e-mail message.
You may contact Allison Larsen (via e-mail or ext. 4063) with any questions.
