Purpose:

Students will understand how middle school study habits and learning are a predictor of high school performance, and opportunities beyond high school. Students will:

• Know how to plot successful middle school course completion and figure out cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA)
• Understand how middle school learning can be projected to high school and beyond
• Be able to project the number of years they will need to complete high school based on their current rate of learning.

Lesson

• Start lesson by reviewing critical vocabulary: on time graduation, semester/trimester, cumulative, grade point average (GPA). Describe the number of classes needed to graduate from high school
• 6 classes each semester so 12 classes a year
• Show students that this is 48 semester classes (12 classes/year X 4 years) in high school
• Share with students that they need to pass 44/48 or 11/12 semester classes each year.
• You can let them know that a “D” is passing but will GREATLY impact their GPA.
• Explain to student that they work they do in middle school prepares them for future learning and sets them up to pass their high school courses.
• Have students calculate how many trimester classes they need to pass in middle school if the same “graduation criteria” applied.
• 11/12 in high school per year and in middle school they have 21 classes per year then 11/12=?/21. So about 19 classes a year or 57 out of 63 classes for all 3 years of middle school.

• Use overhead with 4 year high school projection graph.

What to do if you are NOT on track to Graduate

( these of course is also good things to do even if you are on track to graduate)

• Attend school- the majority of learning happens IN the classroom

• Be involved in class- do class work, participate in discussions

• Do your homework – practice makes smarter

• Study for Tests

• Attend after school study club

• Get involved in ASB, Sports or a Club- students who are involved tend to do better in school

• Chose friends who want to succeed

• Set up a homework spot and ritual at home

• Meet with your counselor

• Talk to your parents about getting extra help

• Take online summer classes

• See if your future high school has any jump start classes in the summer

• Read the book “7 habits of highly effective teens”

• Talk to a successful high school student – see what they do to succeed

• TRY!!!!!
