Test Taking Strategies-Understanding Data
7th Grade
February
ASCA Standards: A:A1 Improve academic self concept, A:A2 Acquire skills for improving learning, B:B2 Plan to achieve goals
Objective: Students will understand the scores on their last WASL and use the information to improve their score on their upcoming WASL
Materials Needed: Computers for students to access their test scores OR print outs of student test scores.
Lesson: Start the lesson by reviewing with students why schools have standardized tests or the WASL – these test take a snapshot of the students skills and help educators know where each particular student stands when the test was taken. The information helps teachers know how to focus their teaching. MORE importantly however is how the test scores help students know their strengths and weaknesses and know what they need to pay attention to in order to improve.
Next using the overhead “Understanding WASL Scores” interpret the scores on the WASL. Explain to students what “standard” is and what below and above standard mean.
Next using the overhead “Moving up a level” explain to students what THEY can do to raise their score.
Next have students fill out their test-taking plan and discuss their plan with a partner.
Next : Students fill out their “My Test-taking Plan” worksheet and file it in their MSLP collection folder.
