Purpose
This lesson will give students the opportunity to examine their employability
level to determine if they are qualified for a high school job (entry level
job). Students will be asked to make goals so they can be qualified for the
high school job or a first job they would like to have. (This lesson isn’t
just about getting a job…it is a way for students to start thinking about
purposefully gaining new experiences).
Materials needed
A copy of job applications (make enough copies so that each student will have a
choice of one or two applications)
Lesson Part 1

Ask students what job they would like to have in high school (if they don’
t think they will work ask them to think of a place they think would be fun to
work for this lesson)

Ask students to brainstorm a list of the “qualifications” they think
a job at McDonalds requires.

Have each student select an application and fill it out to the best of their
ability (about 10 min)

Discuss as a class the qualifications that they are lacking
at this point and more importantly ask them what things they can do so that
they are qualified for the job when the time comes.

Discuss minimum wage _______________. Calculate 40 hour work week, month and
year. Discuss life style (house, car, vacation with this income).

Collect applications for resume lesson in June.

Encourage students to ask their parents about THEIR experience of applying for
their first job.
