The ABCs of Reading Training for Children's Tutors
The ABCs of Reading is a three-hour, hands-on workshop that prepares adults to become reading tutors for children in grades K-3. The training is appropriate for classroom volunteers and tutors who work one-to-one with kids in after-school programs.

Integrating Literacy Instruction in the Content Areas, Grades 6-12 covers the following topics:
Session #1: October 7th, 2008, 3 pm – 6 pm
Reading Overview - Explore the reading process and learn some of the challenges students face.
Session #2: November 4th, 2008, 3 pm – 6pm
Lesson Planning - Learn to plan lessons that include activities that will benefit children the most.
Session #3: December 2nd, 2008, 3 pm – 6 pm
Reading to Children at the Secondary Grades - Examine the benefits of reading to children and learn ways to make it a fun and productive experience.
Session #4: January 13th, 2009, 3 pm – 6 pm
Reading with Children at the Secondary Grades - Learn a variety of strategies to support children with their reading and help them develop greater fluency and comprehension.
Session #5: February 3rd, 2009, 3 pm – 6 pm
Decoding Strategies - Pick up some great games for helping students learn and practice letter recognition and formation, sight reading, phonemic awareness, and phonics.
Session #6: March 3rd, 2009, 3 pm – 6 pm
Writing - Learn activities that will help kids practice the critical skill of writing.
Session #7: March 31st, 2009, 3 pm – 6 pm
Research & Library Skills – Learn new ways to use the library and to develop research as a key component to lessons in all content areas.
