Sheriff's department presents free Internet safety seminar for parents
On Tuesday evening, 7 p.m. Jan. 29, 2008, at H.M. Jackson High School, Janet Malkow of the Snohomish County Sheriff's
Department will help parents and students understand how best to use the Internet safely. Malkow works with the
department's Internet Crimes Against Children Unit.
"The technology is a fact of life for today's young people. However, it can be an unknown or frightening for some parents.
We've planned this workshop to raise awareness and give parents and students information that builds their confidence and
ability to use a valuable tool and to do so safely," commented Lyn Lauzon who is Jackson High's drug and alcohol intervention
specialist. "Parents can minimize potential risks for students — not only at home where students may be accessing the
Internet but in other locations as well." Lauzon has planned a light supper before the event for those who can arrive at 6:30
p.m. "Internet safety is a group effort," notes Lauzon. "Making an evening meal available is one more way of making the event
easier for parents to attend, to bring their teenage students if they wish, and to talk about safe technology use."
