HAWTHORNE COMMUNITY RAISES FUNDS TO BENEFIT STUDENTS AND FAMILIES

Join “The Hawk Hustle” to build connections, health and wellness

On Saturday, May 30, 2009, Hawthorne Elementary School will host its first ever ‘Hawk Hustle,’ a 5K race/walk in north Everett. Participants in the event will raise money to benefit the students and families at Hawthorne. Additionally, the race will promote healthier living in the community and provide an opportunity for Delta area neighbors to get outside and get engaged in the community.

Funds raised will be used to provide student field trips, after school programs for students and adults, a multilingual reader board, extracurricular opportunities and educational resources.

Two races will be held that day. The first is the ‘Hawk Hustle’ 5K run at 8 a.m. Entry fee is $25. The second race is the ‘Little Hawk’ a one-mile run that begins at 9:30 a.m. Children are asked to raise at least $4 for the one-mile kids’ run. Both races start and end at Hawthorne Elementary Field (1110 Poplar St., on the corner of Poplar and 12th St.) and wind through the Delta neighborhood with activities along the way.

“We will have face painting, a bouncy house, three-legged races, and other fun kids activities along the way,” comments Sara Hahn, principal of Hawthorne Elementary. “Local mascots, cheerleaders, and band will also cheer us on!”

Shirley Morrow, a former educator at Hawthorne Elementary school and a Hawthorne Ambassador says, “The ‘Hawk Hustle’ is a great way to educate public awareness about this special school and raise funds for things such as field trips and school supplies. I am honored to have the opportunity to support Hawthorne.”

“I could not think of a better event than the ‘Hawk Hustle’ that promotes all of our enduring principles,” says J.J. Frank, Minority Achievement Program (MAP) Director of the YMCA of Snohomish County and a major sponsor of the run. Frank discusses the four enduring principles of his program, including Well-being, Inclusivity, Community and Stewardship. “The YMCA of Snohomish County Minority Achievers is trying to emphasize well-being and to curtail the rate of obesity in the youth and teens in Snohomish County.”
