Husband/wife musical team direct students in Sing for the Cure

On Tuesday, June 2, and again on Thursday, June 4, the Cascade High School Symphonic Choir and Women’s Select Choir, Vivace, will join Edmonds Community College (EdCC) Symphonic Choir to perform Sing for the Cure. It is no accident that the concerts are planned “in concert” with the Susan G. Komen annual Race for the Cure.

Cascade High School Choir Director Laurie Cappello and husband Kirk Marcy who is an EdCC choir instructor saw the joint concerts as a perfect way to showcase their students’ talents and spirit of community. “When I asked my students how many had been touched by cancer – either in their family or a close acquaintance – nearly everyone raised a hand,” said Laurie. “They wanted to use their healthy, strong voices in the same way that others are using their running power to help raise funds to find a cure.”

Many of the students in the EdCC Symphonic Choir are former members of Cascade’s Vocal Music program. Sharing these two performances with former classmates and friends is a unique and special opportunity. The second connection lies in the fact that the two directors are husband and wife. Kirk Marcy has directed choirs at EdCC for 21 years; Laurie Cappello has taught choirs in Everett Public Schools for the past 17 years, first at Evergreen Middle School and the past seven years at Cascade.

The June 2 concert at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lynnwood ( 6215 196th St. SW) begins at 7:30 p.m.   The June 4 concert at the Everett Civic Auditorium in Everett (2415 Colby Ave.) begins at 7:30 p.m.

In each case, the events are free, although organizers of Sing for the Cure are accepting donations at the door for the Susan G. Komen fund.

Background

“Sing for the Cure” is a symphonic song cycle of ten songs, each sung from the perspective of someone affected by breast cancer: a woman with breast cancer, her partner, her children, her sister, her friends, and the larger community. The songs explore the full range of human emotion, from despair to hope, from grief to humor, and from loss to love. Each song has a spoken-word introduction. The selections include Prelude for the Uncommon Woman; The Community's Voice; Who Will Speak?; Facing Diagnosis; Borrowed Time; The Partner's Voice; The Promise Lives On; Taking Control; Livin' Out Loud Blues; The Softness of My Mother’s Hands, The Child's Voice; The Sister's Voice; Girl in the Mirror; The Mother's Voice; Who Will Curl My Daughter's Hair; Pursuing a Cure; Groundless Ground; Proclaiming Hope; One Voice: I Will Not Be Silent; Testimonial and Come to Me, Mother.

The words and narration were written by Pamela Martin. The music for each song was written by a different composer. It is dedicated to those affected by breast cancer, especially breast cancer survivors and their families and friends. It is a message of hope and healing to the individuals and families touched by breast cancer.

“Susan G. Komen fought breast cancer with her heart, body, and soul. Throughout her diagnosis, treatments, and endless days in the hospital, she spent her time thinking of ways to make life better for other women battling breast cancer instead of worrying about her own situation. That concern for others continued even as Susan neared the end of her fight. Moved by Susan’s compassion for others and committed to making a difference, Nancy G. Brinker promised her sister that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever.

That promise is now Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, the global leader of the breast cancer movement, having invested more than $1 billion since inception in 1982. As the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists, we’re working together to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures.”
