Two Cascade students win arts awards
For his painting Broken, Jeff Anzures of Cascade High School earned this year's State Board of Education art award and a
$200 cash prize. Ludmila Udodik's painting Madame Bovary secured Udodik a place among the student artist winners listed
for regional recognition of their talent by the Northwest Educational Service District 189.
Both have been honored as part of this year's statewide art show coordinated each year by Educational Service Districts
throughout Washington. The works of top artists regionally are submitted for state recognition in the Annual Superintendent's
High School Art Show in Olympia. Because he is receiving one of the top nine awards given each year, Anzures will attend the
May 18, 2007 Olympia banquet with members of his family.
A special guest presenter at this year's art show banquet is Andrea Peterson, the 2007 National Teacher of the Year and a
music specialist from the Granite Falls School District.
Anzures' Broken and the work of the other eight state-level winners will remain on display through May 30 on the second floor
of the OSPI building in Olympia. Each of the nine winning selections will be purchased by OSPI and included in the agency's
permanent art collection. With the addition of this year's winners, the state superintendent's collection houses 277 pieces
reflecting 34 years of excellence in visual arts education in Washington.
"The arts — and the opportunity for kids to express themselves artistically — are an essential part of public education," OSPI
Superintendent Bergeson said. "The arts give students a unique means of expression, allowing them to explore new ideas and
subject matter, as an integral part of learning. Again this year I'm moved by the power, beauty and depth of what our students
    have created."
