Evergreen students join WMEA Junior All State Band and Choir
Six students, all eighth-graders from Evergreen Middle School, performed last weekend with 400 other middle school
musicians. Their musical and vocal concerts were part of the 2006 Washington Music Educators Association (WMEA) Junior
All-State East Band, Orchestra and Choir held at Lewis and Clark High School in Spokane. Three of the performers are Mr.
Gudorf's band students, and three are vocal students in Mrs. Logan's classes. The competitive honor, sponsored by WMEA, is
an annual event that showcases some of the state's most promising young musicians and vocalists.
To be part of the event, students record their best performances. Those tapes are evaluated by a panel of musicians and vocal
experts who select the winners as part of a band or choir that includes the best of the best each fall. Similar instrumental and
choir groups are honored each year from elementary and high school contestants.
Each year, East groups from our region perform one weekend on the west side of the state, and West musicians travel across
the Cascades to perform on this side of Washington on another weekend. The young musicians rehearse together under the
direction of outstanding Washington conductors and present a concert to conclude the day's activities.
This year, the West Orchestra, to perform in Olympia on October 28, will be conducted by Everett's own Paul-Elliott Cobbs,
conductor of the Everett Symphony. Students in the East Band, which included the Evergreen students, were conducted by
the former president of the National Association for Music Education; East Choir students studied with and were conducted by
Richard Nancy of Pacific Lutheran University.
