What a long elevator ride it was! Lu and Seth couldn’t wait to see the view through the wire fence. The wind was blowing through their hair as they looked down. The cars on the street looked like toy cars. What an amazing city this was!
Frankie could hear the people’s screams from a long distance. She could hear terror and excitement in the screams. The sound of the screams occurred intermittently. A brief moment of silence would be followed by full-force screams. Frankie could also hear what she thought might be the rattle of chains.
The kids were allowed to be here without their parents, but they were told to whisper three times by different adults. The place was big, cool, and quiet. Computers were set up by the information desk so people could find exactly what they needed or use the Internet for research. The kids looked at some magazines, listened to a few CDs, read a short book, and then saw a puppet show. By using a special card, they were able to borrow some items.
The Furniture Fair truck arrived and opened its back door to deliver LeAnne’s furniture. A cat jumped out of the truck and onto the hot pavement. It leaped and hopped into LeAnne’s cool garage. LeAnne loved dogs, but she would rather not own a cat. Now she had to spend her time looking for a cat. LeAnne looked at her watch, sighed, and began to look around, calling, “Kitty! Kitty!” The cat scooted underneath her car. If the cat only knew that LeAnn was trying to help it! She wanted to take it back to its owner, or at least find a home for it. Eventually the cat came out, and LeAnn was able to find its owner.
