Text: The Wretched Stone     Author: Chris Van Allsburg                Name: _________________________________________

    Step 1
    Step 2
    Step 3
    Step 4

    Evaluate the character’s decisions:
What is the action the character takes?

    (Text based)
    What were the consequences?

    (Text based and/or inferred information)
    Why did the character

    act in this way?

    (Text based and/or inferred information)
What flaws were there in the character’s thinking?

    Explain your answer.
What logical reasons support the choices made?

    Explain your answer.
Do you agree or disagree with the characters reasoning?

    Support your answer.
Does the character’s treatment of the other characters seem fair?

    Why or why not?
    Crew:

    1.   loads supplies and sails away

    Prepared for trip

    Part of their job description

Sailors continued to watch the stone which led them to stop doing their jobs including not preparing for the storm Choosing to do their jobs well lead to a smooth sailing and they avoided boredom.

    Captain chose crew wisely
    Opinion:

    I agree/disagree…

I agree with the crew’s reasoning. Evidence: The crew wanted a successful voyage and they actively avoided boredom while on the voyage.

    Opinion:

    I agree/disagree…

I disagree with the captain’s and the crew’s decision to bring an unknown object on board.

Evidence: Even though there were signs that things were not quite right on this island: there were no fruit or animals present, it smelled, the water was bitter and the island could not be found on the map.

    [Note: Illustrates foreshadowing]

    Opinion:

    I agree/disagree…

I disagree with the crew’s reasoning when they continued to watch the stone.

Evidence: The stone overtook their lives. They became ape-like and mutinous.

    Opinion:

    I agree/disagree…

I disagree with the Captain’s reasoning.

Evidence: He was not strong enough to keep the crew away from the stone and doing their duties. This led to mutiny and the destruction of the ship.
    Judgment:

    Yes, it’s fair/ No, it’s not fair…

The crew’s treatment of the captain was not fair.

Evidence: They did not respect his position and disobeyed his orders to prepare for the storm.

    Judgment:

    Yes, it’s fair/ No, it’s not fair…

The captain treated the crew members fairly.

Evidence: He is tolerant and gentle with them. He tried to solve their problem and eventually saved them. He helped them to get passage home at the end.

    2.   reads stories and sings songs

    Passed the time happily

    Entertainment on a long voyage

    3.   explores island

    Found stone

    Curious, interested

Crew chose to bring an unknown item onto the ship when they did not know if it was safe
    4.   takes stone on board

    Crew became monkey-like

Probably due to the rock’s influence on them

Choosing to stay by the stone gave them special abilities such as swinging easily from the ropes
    5.   mutinies against captain

Hid from captain in hold Felt threatened by captain Even though there was a life-threatening storm happening, they stayed in the hold with the stone rather than trying to save the ship and their lives
    Captain:

    6.   worried about the change in the crew’s behavior and appearance

tries to get crew back by reading to them which helped to make crew come back to their “humanness”

Captain realized he had to save crew from the rock

Captain allowed the crew to continue to watch the stone and this led to mutiny

He read to the crew to try to bring them back to themselves.

    7.   covers rock when it glows again Prevented rock from mesmerizing crew He hoped to save the crew and he guessed that it was the stone that caused the strange behavior  He covered the stone up to see if that helped.

He made the connection between the crew’s appearance and their monkeyness.

    8.   sets fire to ship and then sinks sink Crew is safe;

Stone could still be found by someone else
    Captain did not want any other crew to be affected by the wretched stone;

Ship was already destroyed, so sinking it made sense
Captain did not warn others about the dangers of the stone He sank the stone with the burning ship

Step 5: What is the most important conclusion that can be drawn from the selection?

Step 6: What would you do in a similar situation? Why?
