Classroom Based Performance Assessment

(Adapted from the 2001 Elementary Music Grade 5 Assessment)

Assessment description:

Students will create a two-measure musical phrase for a pitched instrument. Students will only use notes B, A, G and low E in their composition. Students may use a combination of half, quarter and eighth notes, and one quarter rest. The composition must end on E or G.

Students will play their composition as part of a whole group question/answer music activity. The class will play together two measures (question) of the piece, and then each student in turn will play their originally composed measures (answer), continuing until every student has played their composition.

Directions for Administering:

Day One:
· Students are given music worksheet and instructions for composing their piece.
· Students may practice their composition while writing.
· Teachers may coach students to write compositions that are appropriate for their skill level.
· Teachers may coach students to end their composition on E or G.

Day Two:
· Students sit in a circle to perform their composition.
· Students are given time to practice and warm-up.
· Entire calls will play the question phrase, and each individual student will play their originally composed answer phrase.
· Teacher will score assessments by moving behind the circle of students, looking over the students’ shoulders to see the music while they play.
· Students may be given up to 3 chances to play their composition correctly.

Other information:
· This assessment is a summative assessment of the pitched instrument unit.
· Teachers may use any pitched instrument (i.e. recorder, xylophone)
· Recording the performance is optional.
