    Graduation Requirement Information

Washington State requires that all public school students to complete a course in Washington State History. Everett Public Schools provides an opportunity for students to fulfill this graduation requirement during their 7th grade year. The graduation requirement earned with a passing grade will be reflected on the high school transcript as a “check-off” rather than high school credit. In the event that a student does not pass the 7th grade Washington State History class, that student will be required to take a more rigorous Washington State History course during high school.

How will this work for most 7th grade students?

    ·
Washington State History is offered during the first trimester of the school year.
    · A passing grade in Washington State History will earn students a “check-off” on their high school transcript stating they have fulfilled the Washington State History requirement.

Can students earn high school credit if they earn a passing grade in this class?

No, the 7th grade Washington State History is taught with curriculum and at a pace that is appropriate for 7th grade, not for high school.
    · The timeline being addressed begins at Washington statehood and ends with Current Issues. This is approximately half of the content addressed at the high school level.
    · The textbook reading level and activities are appropriate for 7th grade but not for high school.
    · High school credit requires more class time than one middle school trimester.
