    2013-14 School Year

    September 2013

    Getting Started

Here are your TO-DO’s to help get the program up and running in your classroom at the start of the school year:

    1. READ 180 computer applications will not be available for use until September 13th. This “delay” is not actually a delay. It allows class lists and schedules to settle in before master uploads take place. As soon as possible, please e-mail me a list of the periods you are teaching READ 180.

    2. rBooks have been delivered (or will be delivered) to the main office of schools. The numbers of rBooks sent to you were based on the inventories submitted in the spring and principal projections for READ 180 enrollments. Some inventories or projections were not provided, so you may be asked to provide information regarding the materials you need. READ 180 material distribution is not a science!  Please e-mail me if you need additional rBooks or if you have too many rBooks.

    What’s New?

We now have access to over 58,000 Scholastic Reading Counts! quizzes! Set goals for students to read more words than ever!

    Accessing SAM and READ 180

Student and teacher access to READ 180, SAM, and other Scholastic programs takes place using Scholastic Online .

    The First Three Weeks

The first three weeks of every new school year is a time to (re-)acquaint students with the routines and behaviors that support the READ 180 program. Taking this time to walk through the structures and expectations of the program pays off time and time again. Suggestions for the start of the year include:

Use of the First Three Weeks curriculum provided by READ 180.

Explicit teaching of the Red Routines , to be found in the back of the teacher rBooks.

Teach the tricks to SRI test-taking .

Expectations for academic talk and discussions.

Matching students to “just right” books and activities like Make Your Match and speedbooking .

Get students to start writing! Check out the Resources for Differentiated Instruction (RDI) in your teacher bookshelf for ideas.

    Mark Your Calendars

Throughout the year, the READ 180 Implementation Calendar for the 2013-14 school year will be updated. Use this handy one-page plan to get a summary of the year’s activities.

There are four SRI testing windows this school year. During each of the SRI windows, all students enrolled in READ 180 take the SRI.

    SRI Window #1: September 13 – 27

    SRI Window #2: November 12 – 27

    SRI Window #3: March 3 – 14

    SRI Window #4: May 20 – June 7
