New Everett Science Resource Center @ Hawthorne
The grand adventure begins! The week of July 19, all of the ‘Old SRC’ (Science Portable at Longfellow) materials, plus 16 pallets of new science modules arrived at the New Everett Science Resource Center- all within two days. The New SRC is located in room B013 and SRC office in Room B007 at Hawthorne Elementary School.
Shirley and Stephanie are busy setting up the office and unpacking materials from the old SRC and beginning the process of preparing the new modules to go out to the first round of schools. We plan to send out the completed modules by the last week in August. Training for the first round of schools is scheduled for September 1.

More good news, we now have a full time Elementary Science Facilitator! Welcome to Dr Anna Williamson. Anna comes to us from Bellingham School District. Besides being an excellent classroom teacher—Presidential Award Winner, she is active in promoting quality science education, examples include: serving on the board of Washington Science Teachers Association, teaching summer geology classes for teachers at Western Washington University, writing numerous articles on elementary science instruction for the WSTA Journal, field testing STC modules for NSRC, and providing elementary science training at the local, state, and national level.
Middle School Materials
Middle School Materials
The ‘Old SRC @ Longfellow’ will be used to store the new middle school science modules as they arrive over the next few weeks. The new middle school modules will be initialized and distributed to buildings over the course of the year. Training for the 8 th grade module (Energy Motion and Machines) will be September 13 & 14. Seventh grade is scheduled for November and sixth grade in January. Pacing the implementation over the year is necessary because many middle school science teachers are responsible for science at multiple grade levels.
High School Adoption News
High School Adoption News
The grades 9 & 10 adoption process begins in August when Jack Mcleod and Bob Sotak travel to sunny Richland Washington for a five day National Curriculum Leadership Academy leadership training. NCLA is a national effort supported by NSF, BSCS, Boeing, and PNW Lab along with other corporate partners, to support inquiry science teaching at the high school level. The NCLA model is based on active involvement of all science staff. In November, John McBee (Cascade HS) and Cindy McIntyre (Everett HS) will join the NCLA team. Everett has committed to a three year involvement in the NCLA, which will take us through the adoption and implementation of all high school science courses.

The new science modules will move between buildings on a rotation schedule. This year there will only be two rotations: September 1 – November 15 and January 31 – May 15. (Note: beginning next year, the modules will be rotated on a trimester basis.) Elementary Science training will be in two waves, corresponding with delivery of science modules. A one day follow-up sessions will be scheduled, by grade level, approximately a month after the initial training--dates and locations TBD.

Middle School Workshop Schedules (Revised)
The first round of new middle school modules will be housed on-site for this year. The modules will be implemented in three waves. Each teacher will receive three days of training for each grade level module, two initial use (see below) and a one day follow-up session approximately a month after the initial training. Training will correspond with the delivery of the units to the schools.

Last year we added a new caretaker at Lively, Shelley Erickson. Shelly, is working hard to maintain the school gardens over the summer. Another change: instructional day field trips to Lively will now be scheduled through the Curriculum office, ext. 4067 . After hours and weekend use will continue to be scheduled through Facilities Use, ext. 4045.
