Information and action to start applying to colleges


 
ASCA Standards: A:B1 Improve Learning
A:B2 Plan to Achieve Goals
 
GOALS: The student will be able to fill out a college application and know how to submit them online
The student will be able to identify what colleges are looking for when evaluating application    


The student will be able to identify major themes of their high school career

The student will be able to analyze themes and synthesize them into a potential college essay

The student will participate in the FAFSA4caster and have an idea how much they will need to pay for college

 

TIMELINE:       50 minute class period

 
ESSENTIAL How do I apply to the school I want to go to?
QUESTIONS: Will I get into my dream school?
What should I write my essay about?
How much is college going to cost    


 

MATERIALS     Classroom with overhead and computer hookup
NEEDED: Small group lesson format- students should be grouped by counselor and should be 8-12 students for each group


Optional: Counselors may want to have lesson in a computer lab so students can work on applications and FASFA4caster
 


 

CLASSROOM     Powerpoint-(20 minutes)





ACTIVITY 1:    
· Go through the first 18 slides of the PowerPoint
· Pay attention to notes at the bottom of each slide, the first set of slide are talking points about all the different options at the universities


 
CLASSROOM Begin an application (10 minutes) PowerPoint slides 19-21





ACTIVITY 2:
· Have students pick a university that they are interested in attending
· Have students go online and set up an account at that university and let them start the application

· Have students do exercise and lead discussion about making the essay your own unique personal experience.
