Bill Humphreys
Bill earned his undergraduate degree from the University of California at
Santa Barbara in 1985 and his graduate degree at Luthern-Northwestern
Theological Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1989, where he learned
to say his “O’s” funny. He’s been trying to get over that ever since. After
working for 7 years in the Lutheran Church, Bill made a transition, first to
local politics, and finally to human services, where he has devoted the last
14 years of his professional career. He is currently Vice President of Housing
and Food for Volunteers of America Western Washington where he
provides supervision to 3 agency directors who oversee 7 different programs
that touch the lives of thousands of our neighbors in need every year.
Married for 14 years with one daughter, a hobby-like passion for a good handmade cigar, a love of
fine wine, good food and a good book, Bill describes himself as a happy human being, and most of
the time, well-adjusted. One dog, one cat, and a wonderful family, he is concerned every day about
the fate of our planet. The rest, he says, is fluff.

Suzanne Eviston
Suzanne Eviston is in her 14th year with the City of Everett Police
Department and has served as a patrol dog team since 1999. Suzanne with
her Police Dog Axle became involved with the VOA Christmas program
through Dr. Wright - an avid police dog lover! Dr. Wright was one of
Suzanne’s many medical professional heroes who guided her through an
arduous recovery from a serious on duty collision that nearly took her life in
2007. When asked what a hero means to her, Suzanne believes that we all can
be someone’s hero. Many look at Emergency services personnel, or military
personnel as heroes, but everyone can find an opportunity in daily life to
be a hero to someone in need. Especially when it is unexpected of us. The
audience must recognize that Suzanne’s work as an City of Everett Police Officer never stops – not
even if she is on Stage at the Civic Auditorium for the Christmas Spectacular. Illegal activity On-
Stage during tonight’s performance will provoke an arrest! Suzanne applauds the audience for being
Community Heroes in support of both the Providence Children’s Program and the Volunteers of
America Food Bank this year.
(If you watch “God Bless America” carefully at the end of the show you will
get a glimpse of a little fellow, who is following in the foot steps of his grandfather, Axle.)

Bob is also on the Board of Directors of the Providence Regional Medical
Center. “The Providence Board of Directors adopts one family every year
for Thanksgiving and Christmas. We have found that more and more
families are asking for help with Christmas - for food and other essential
items.” Therefore, Bob and his wife, Jamie, wish to thank all of you for being here tonight in
support of the Volunteers of America Food Bank.

Patriotic Welcome
Twenty five years ago on October 23, 1983 a suicide bomber drove a yellow
Mercedes truck, filled with 12,000 pounds of explosives, into the U.S.
Marines headquarters at the Beirut International Airport. The attack, which
killed 220 Marines, 18 U.S. Navy personnel and 3 Army soldiers, was the
deadliest one-day death toll for the US Marine Corps since Iwo Jima in
World War II, when 2,500 perished in a single day. In the weeks preceding
the bombing, Jim Abner, now an operating room technician at Providence
Regional Medical Center Everett, had worked closely with many of those
Marines under combat conditions to evacuate students and others from the
American University in Beirut. After the bombing many wives and children were left to grieve and
find ways of emotionally and spiritually reunifying their families. When asked by the producer of
the Christmas Spectacular 2009 to join the show, Jim felt honored to play the role of the soldier
who doesn’t come home. This year, Jim has been invited back to the show as a symbol of all of
America’s men and women in the military and to join Mayor Ray Stephanson for the “Pledge of
Allegiance” as well as the closing “God Bless America.” Every year in closing the show, Brian Tracey
repeats — without America’s men and women serving in the military “we could not live our lives the
way we chose.”

Training Corps (NJROTC)
Richard ‘Rick’ Gile spent much of his naval career flying helicopters in com-
bat support missions during the Cold War and Desert Storm.
He earned a Master’s Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies at
the Naval War College in Rhode Island. He spent three years working at
NATO headquarters where he was part of a team that completely redesigned the post-Cold War
command structure of NATO.
He spent three years on the aircraft carrier ENTERPRISE as the Weapons Officer followed by three
years at the University of Washington managing the Navy ROTC unit. He retired from the Navy
and in 2007 he joined Everett Public Schools where he assumed responsibility for the NJROTC
program at Everett High.
He was recently honored by being selected from among 150 instructors from 13 states including
Guam and Japan as the NJROTC Citizenship Development Teacher of the Year.
We are not a military recruiting program nor is there any post-high school military obligation. We
are a citizenship development program. We encourage students to continue their education and
become great citizens ready to take on the challenges of life.
The Junior ROTC program develops the self-discipline, self-confidence, and the leadership skills to
prepare these these young men and women to meet life’s challenges. CDR Gile says, “Some people
worry about the youth of today, I don’t!
I get to work with the best of them everyday. Our Cadets are challenged to achieve their personal
best in everything they do. They work as hard as anybody in school and they do it with a smile on
their face.”
Donations to Everett NJROTC are most welcome! The money we raise each year helps fund the
travel for the many field trips we take around the area, for our various team competitions and for
Cadet leadership development programs. Checks can be mailed to “Everett High School” and write
“NJROTC” in the memo line.

Dan Boudreau
Gunnery Sergeant Boudreau served in variety of infantry and related assign-
ments during 20 years in the Marines. The “Gunny” as he is known within
the Everett High School NJROTC unit served in Marine Corps Security
Forces, two infantry battalions, a reconnaissance battalion, a Marine Secu-
rity Guard Detachment Commander at two US Embassies and lastly as a
Force Reconnaissance Marine. Upon retirement in 2001 Dan earned a BA
in History Secondary Education in 2004 and later in 2011 completed his
MA in Secondary Ed/Social Studies. Between his BA and MA studies Dan
worked in the security and security training field in Iraq, Afghanistan and
several African countries. It is ironic that after nearly 10 years of working
and studying that he would find himself right back in uniform. The NJROTC Naval Science
-
In
structor position provides a unique opportunity to teach some aspects of social studies while at the
same time passing along the sense of service, self discipline and team work that he experienced and
can now teach to the Cadets of the Navy JROTC unit of Everett High school.

Brian Tracey
Brian Tracey was born into a large family from the Boston
area. He recalls the first words from his parents as being
“responsibility” and “work” as much as “momma”. Brian worked
his way through college in part through his talent as a singer and
horn player in a band that he founded with his brothers. His
plans for continuing on to medical school were interrupted when
his brothers suggested “going on the road.” Indeed, the Tracey’s
were so successful that they become known as “The Osmond
Brothers” of New England. After nine years of performing,
a position opened for his band in Lowell Massachusetts. He
then became involved in the production end of musical groups and events. However,
television had always been on the back of his mind. An opportunity arose to produce his
own TV show in the Northeast, which became very popular. Subsequently, his television
talent caught the eye of an influential figure in San Francisco that ultimately placed him
as a founder of the KING 5 “Evening Magazine.” This show went on to become an very
popular news program in the Northwest. After nine years of “Evening Magazine,” he was
tapped to join NBC’s Discovery Channel out of New York. Finally, after many years as a
performer and broadcaster, he chose to return to Seattle and establish his own business,
Ride the Ducks of Seattle. Brian can say that this has proven to be a very fun-filled
adventure for himself as well as for all those who have taken the tour. The fact that there
are now 17 DUCKS testifies that business has been growing rapidly over the past few years!
For the 7th year Brian has once again volunteered to be the Master of Ceremonies
— this
time for the 11th Anniversary of the Christmas Spectacular. This year Brian was again
encouraged to volunteer for the show with the words “It will be easy this year!” just before
the producer of our show, Dr. Sanford Wright, handed Brian the 40+ page SCRIPT that
went along with the invitation.

Dehner Franks
Dehner Franks is an accomplished songwriter, musician, musical
director and teacher with a double degree from the University
of Washington (Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Music in Jazz
Studies), who is both a Musical and Spiritual Center for the
Christmas Spectacular. Once again, Dehner worked with Jack
Klitzman, to arrange the music for tonight’s show. Dehner’s
music has helped to celebrate the 100th birthday of Las Vegas.
He was commissioned by the Nordstrom Corporation to record,
produce and arrange a holiday CD; “Holiday Lights.” Mr. Franks
has performed numerous concerts as a soloist with orchestra,
a jazz combo leader and as a solo pianist worldwide, including:
“Panafest,” Ghana, West Africa and a performance tour of the
United Arab Emerites. He played piano solos at the “World Cup” International Ballroom
Dancing Competition at the Kremlin Palace in Moscow, Russia an annual event viewed by
an audience of an estimated 100 million people. Dehner has played The Catalina Bar and
Grill, Hollywood, California; Mt. Hood Jazz Festival, the Port Townsend Jazz Festival and
with the Everett Symphony. For the past 10 years he has taken great pride in supporting the
“Christmas Spectacular” in support of the Volunteers of America. Dehner’s song “With
These Hands” was used as the Theme for the entire Volunteers of America 2007 National
Convention. Dehner performs regularly at Caesar’s Palace, Las Vegas, Nevada. Dehner
Franks music for tonight’s show includes an arrangement for the “Liberace Salute” and
original songs: “Santa Swing” and “Vengan Con Migo”. Even though Dehner has moved
from Las Vegas to Houston Texas since last year’s show, he’s once again brought his son,
Dehner Jr. and family with him so that they share in his joy of supporting the Providence
Children’s Center , the Volunteers of America Food Bank and the community in which we
live. On the next page you will find the recognition from Dehner’s long time friend, Dr.
Sanford Wright, the producer of our show for being the musical and spiritual center of the
Christmas Spectacular from the very beginning - 11 years ago. Furthermore, the lyrics from
his song “Help Me To Stand” have been reprinted for this year’s Program so that we are all
reminded of the inner strength required by many of our friends, neighbors and colleagues,
who are struggling with the problems of illness, layoffs and homelessness brought on by
the economic and social crises of our times.

Help Me to Stand
“HELP ME TO STAND”
*
by Dehner Franks
There’s a storm that keeps on rage’n and the wind keeps on blowing.
My heart is aching and my strength is almost gone.
But I turn to you because you know just what to do,
My Savior Help Me To Stand.
I try to do what’s right and I’ve kept up the fight,
But somewhere I went wrong and I can’t, I can’t turn around.
But I turn to you because you know just, just what to do,
My Savior Help Me To Stand.
I tried to make it on my own but it left me here alone,
I need you to stand, precious Lord take my hand.
But I turn to you because you know just, just what to do,
My Savior Help Me To Stand.
I know that through Grace I can make it, if I just remember all that you’ve said.
Despair and distress are behind me but now there’s trouble up ahead.
Those that I love have forsaken me, they wait to see me fall in shame.
If I fall as I fall I’ll be reaching and calling out your name.
And now I turn, I turn, I turn to you, you know Lord, your gonna see me through,
My Savior, Help Me To Stand.
And now I turn to you, you know just, just what to do,
My Savior, Help Me, Help Me Lord, Help Me Lord To Stand

Chris Clay
Originally born in Freehold New Jersey, Chris’s love of music and the
entertainment industry was realized at an early age, but his time to shine
arrived after high school. During his college years, Chris not only worked
as a game designer and test analyst for Microsoft but he was a working
actor and dancer in Seattle. He also landed two national commercials,
which lead him to his first Broadway show in New York, 42nd Street. Chris
started in the Chorus, but landed a principle role of Andy Lee within two
years. During his time in New York, his relentless passion of entertainment
filled his plate. While performing on Broadway, Chris pursued Stand-up
Comedy, becoming a headliner at Stand-Up New York, and Broadway
Comedy Club, also became a Professional Photographer, and DJ. www.
chrisclaymation.com. Last year Chris enjoyed producing the onstage
“Future Stars of Music”competition for the Christmas Spectacular 2009. This year the Christmas
Spectacular again is thrilled that Chris brings New York Broadway level talent to the show.
Furthermore, the Christmas Spectacular appreciates Chris’s willingness to play himself in a mini-
drama created within the Christmas Spectacular that identifies a latent desire that many of us can
appreciate - a desire “to be discovered” or appreciated in a certain way – even if it might require
sacrifices latter on in life. Finally, again this year Chris has helped make possible “TEXT VOTING”
for our show.

Aubrey Logan is a jazz and pop singer/trombone player from Snohomish,
WA. She began her music and entertainment career growing up here in
the Pacific Northwest. She graduated from Jackson High School in Mill
Creek in 2006, and she recently graduated from Berklee College of Music
in Boston, MA with a degree in Trombone Performance.
Aubrey met her manager in Switzerland last year, the Grammy award-
winning recording artist, songwriter, entertainer, and Rock and Roll Hall of
Fame inductee, the late Solomon Burke. He had chosen her as the winner
of the Shure-Montreux International Jazz Voice Competition.
Aubrey lovingly remembers Solomon, dubbed the “King of Rock and Soul”
tonight as he passed away this last October. She will be recording her debut album this Summer
with grammy-nominated producer, jazz pianist, and director for the Grammy Orchestra, Patrice
Rushen. Rushen, a long-time musical influence to Aubrey, has produced and recorded with artists
such as The Temptations, Chaka Kahn, Babyface, Prince, George Duke, Sonny Rollins, Herbie
Hancock, and others.
Aubrey lives in Boston with her husband Chris. She leads worship at her church and volunteers
as a music director at a Boston inner-city high school. As the daughter of two music educators
in Snohomish, Washington, Aubrey grew up inhaling every genre of music from jazz to rock &
roll, pop to country to gospel, classical to R&B. From early childhood she was memorizing James
Taylor’s lyrics, as well as Cole Porter’s. Music enthralled and bedazzled her.
Aubrey got her start singing at church and taking rolls in school musicals, then expanding to
local off-Broadway theaters playing child rolls, and entering local contests. She became the most-
requested National Anthem singer at the Seattle Mariner’s Safeco Field. Aubrey was featured as a
young artist with the Seattle Pops, under the direction of Marvin Hamlisch, at age 11. At this early
age, Aubrey had enough encouragement from family and friends to record a pop demo.
In middle school, Aubrey wanted to switch her class schedule so she could eat lunch with her
friends instead of alone. This required her to enroll in band class, even though Aubrey didn’t play
an instrument! Due to the lack of trombone players in the school band, Aubrey was encouraged to
try her hand at it and immediately, the trombone made perfect sense to her. As a trombonist, and
a curious one at that, Aubrey was exposed to the wonders of jazz, and soon the swingin’ sound of
the Count Basie Orchestra was not only influencing her trombone playing, but her singing as well.
It was at this age when Aubrey’s development and exploration of her own jazz/pop sound began.
During Aubrey’s high school years, she began to make her mark as the 1st place winner of the high
school female jazz vocal category at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival, a finalist in many statewide
solo and ensemble contests as a vocalist and trombone player, a semi-finalist in the Grammy In The

Schools foundation for young musicians, and was awarded the “Louis Armstrong Jazz Award” by
her high school band director.
At age 17, Aubrey was accepted as one of 8 semi-finalists from around the world to participate
in the Shure-Montreux Jazz Voice competition at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland.
Simultaneously, an opportunity arose for Aubrey to participate in a summer workshop under jazz
drummer, Terri Lyne Carrington at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Aubrey decided to go to
Boston, and was awarded a full scholarship to attend Berklee College while participating in the
summer clinic.
At Berklee, Aubrey had the chance to perform with and study under trombonist, arranger, band-
leader and Grammy Nominee Phil Wilson, who became her most influential mentor. Aubrey
performed for artists and bands incuding Burt Bacharach, Tower of Power, Linda Rondstadt,
Smokey Robinson, Paula Cole, Lalah Hathaway, and Blood, Sweat, and Tears, while attending
Berklee.
In addition to her solo interests, Aubrey has spent the last three and a half years singing tight
harmonies with Boston-based vocal quartet Syncopation, recently featured as an artist at Boston’s
biggest party: the 4th of July Celebration on the Charles River Esplanade with the Boston Pops
under the direction of Keith Lockheart.
Not many pleasures in this world outweigh Aubrey’s love of entertaining an audience. She enjoys
making people smile, cry, and even sing along. This passion for winning over people’s hearts
helped woo over the audience at the 2009 Shure-Montreux Jazz Voice competition. At 17, Aubrey
had to forego the opportunity, but a second chance came around later. Aubrey won the Audience’s
Choice Award at the festival, as well as the Jury’s 1st Place Award.
This year, Aubrey was signed to a management contract with Grammy award-winning recording
artist, songwriter, and entertainer, and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, the late Solomon
Burke. Burke was known for his hits like “Cry to Me,” featured in the movie, Dirty Dancing, and
“Everybody Needs Somebody to Love” performed by the Rolling Stones, the Blues Brothers, and
Wilson Picket, as well as numerous other soul-standards performed by artists such as Erik Clapton,
Bruce Springstein, and Tom Petty.
Aubrey lovingly remembers Solomon, dubbed the “King of Rock and Soul” tonight as he passed
away this last October. She will be recording her debut album in his honor this Spring with
grammy-nominated producer, jazz pianist, and director for the Grammy Orchestra, Patrice Rushen.
Rushen, a long-time musical influence to Aubrey, has produced and recorded with artists such as
Quincy Jones, The Temptations, Chaka Kahn, Babyface, George Bensen, Prince, George Duke, Joe
Williams, Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock, and others.
Aubrey is thrilled to be back home for her second time at the Christmas Spectacular this year.

Olga Foraponova
In forty-one years I have seen some very great dancers who embody the
very nature of the music to which they are performing. With that -genu
ine honesty to the music and the movement, they become magical. They
lose themselves in the music, because for them there is nothing else. They
live in the music and when the music ends, they die only to be born again
when the music continues. A dancer/performer like this is one in a million.
Rarely do we have the opportunity and the thrill of seeing such a creature,
for that is what they are. They shed their mortal human being and become
one with the music, as if their body has become the notes and the lines of
the music on the written page. The music controls their soul! I have had the
pleasure of experiencing one of these “creatures.” I have had the honor, the
pleasure and the delight of being one of the coaches of such a person. She
is Olga Foraponova. She opened my eyes to a whole new way of moving to music from the moment
I saw and touched her. It was my good fortune to help her and her equally stunning partner, David
Hamilton, reach the pinnacle of dance when they became the United States American Smooth
Champions. The style of dance mentioned was changed forever more because of the amazing ability
to shed their human skin to become one with the music whenever they performed. For me Olga
became the ultimate expression of what a lady dancer can only dream to become. I liken her arrival
on our shores of America from Russia to the first time the great Natalia Makarova, the Russian
ballet dancer, performed in the West at Covent Garden in London. We who saw that performance
could not applaud because we were smitten with the fact that we were seeing something not of this
world, but something that went beyond our world of understanding. Dance is an expression of Love
and Olga is Dance.
Rufus Dustin (International dancer, teacher adjudicator)
Before the Christmas Spectacular 2010, Olga was invited many times to New York, Los Angeles,
Delaware, Fort Lauderdale, San Fransciso, Colombus Ohio, Minneapolis and Moscow to coach
champions and finalists in America Style ballroom dancing – though she is equally at home -teach
ing latin and other ballroom styles. So – it is not surprising this year that Olga judged a major
Amateur Competition in Moscow last month - and will return to Russia next week to Judge the
World Championships! Also, during this past year, Olga with her dance partner, David Hamilton,
again directed several dance camps for top American and Standard style dancers. As Director of
“OlysDance”, Olga has devoted countless hours to develop her very successful local dance business
located at the Dorothy Jayne Studio. If you enjoy dance lessons at “competitive prices” please call

Andrea has been a surgical technologist for 13 years and a Providence Regional

and remove gall bladders. Andrea loves her work because she gets to play -an ac
tive role in helping relieve peoples pain.
Andrea started singing at age three with her Dad to the Statler Brothers “There
must be something about me that she loves”. At five she sang “The Candy Man”
in he first school talent show – and has been singing gleefully ever since. Though
the songs have changed and the venues have gotten bigger, she still remembers
the simple delight of belting out songs in her living room.
Andrea dedicates this performance to her daughter, Alexis. “I love you sweetie!
Just remember life is always better with a song!”
About “Defying Gravity” from “Wicked” - There are two sides to every story – even “The Wizard
of Oz”! Long before there was a Dorothy Gale, Scarecrow, Tinman and Cowardly Lion, there was
Elphaba, whose only crime was a natural gift for magic and the misfortune of being born green.
Elphaba hoped that one day she could work her magic along side the great wizard of Oz - and
the people would think she was special. Yet, as it happened, Elphaba’s meeting with the Wizard
turned out badly. She learned that the wizard had no magic of his own and - in fact - he wanted to
use Elphaba’s magic so the people of Oz would still follow him. Elphaba refused and ran away. Un-
fortunately, before she could tell her fellow Ozzians of the Wizard’s lies, he accused her of terrible
things and labeled her the “Wicked Witch“. After being put down and called an outcast, Elphaba
decided that for the rest of her life, no one would tell her what to do!

Grew up in the small town of Machias, Washington raising farm animals,
planting crops, and studying hard. However, in October 2011 I came to the
streets of Everett, Washington where I’ve been training how to hip hop to
the beat of a Christmas Spectacular.

Patti Larson
Patti Larson has been extraordinarily important to the “Christmas
Spectacular”, ever since it was created in the wake of the Food Bank
shortages following “9-11”.
Further more, in her administrative role with the Dorothy Jayne
Foundation, she has continued to play a pivotal role in the communications
and coordination for this event. This year, Patti again helped arrange the
Online Tickets through “Brown Paper Tickets”. As an Everett native,

Oly’s Dance at the Dorothy Jayne Studio
2931 Bond Street, Everett, Washington 98201
Olga Foraponova, former U.S. Ballroom
Champion, World Dance Finalist, PBS
performer and First Citizen of Russia, chose
to establish OlysDance at the Dorothy Jayne
Studio June 28, 2004 instead of accepting
an opportunity to join the cast of “Dancing
With The Stars”. The Dorothy Jayne Studio
has theatrical ballroom lighting designed in
cooperation with Pacific Northwest Theatrical
Associates (PNTA). With the assistance of
Richard Eaks (Puget Sound Video) both
professional level sound and video projects
have been recorded. “Celebration Here”, tonight featuring Victor Benedetti backed by the
Everett Chorale and the Snohomish County Intermezzo and Chamber Singers directed
by Lew Mathews, was originally recorded for the Dehner Franks Album “Real Santa”
right here in the Dorothy Jayne Studio. The Studio has been the site of many outstanding
ballroom showcases and special events that have featured national and international
ballroom dance champions. “LIVE” Webcasting at The Dorothy Jayne Studio allows
viewing of Studio events beyond the walls of the Studio to the World Wide Web. The
creation of The Dorothy Jayne Studio would not have been possible without the work
of Dr. Sanford Wright, and also the interest and support of Peter Newland of Hill Street
Investment. World Show Dance Champions, like Jon Wilkins, coach at the Dorothy Jayne
Studio. Yet, despite an international reputation, dance lessons at the Dorothy Jayne Studio
are offered at very competitive local rates - with dancers’ special circumstances taken into
account. Contact Oly’s Dance Studio at 425-257-0102 or e-mail olysstudio@gmail.com. For

Dorothy Jayne Wright
The Dorothy Jayne Foundation
Dorothy Jayne Wright was born in Spokane in 1908. As a youngster she had her tonsils taken
out on the kitchen table. Her father, “Big Jayne” was Co-Captain of the Washington State
Cougars. Dorothy Jayne taught dancing for “Professor Calvert” and danced in local vaudeville
shows while attending Lewis and Clark High School for which she designed the cover of the
senior annual. She attended the University of Washington, while dancing with a Russian
ballet troupe that performed before the Queen of Romania. Latter in Los Angeles Dorothy
Jayne was part of the famous Belcher School of Dance and studied at the Plaza Hotel in New
York with Bill Robinson. She was given recognition for assisting with the annual Wenatchee
Apple Blossom Parade before marrying and moving to Everett. There Doroty Jayne became
a well known local dance teacher and arts enthusiast. She mostly taught in her basement
studio and put on shows in the 1950’s at the Everett Golf and Country Club as well as for the
Mukilteo School District Parent Teachers Association at Rosehill Elementary School. One
feature of those performances – the Rosehill Rosebuds – is still performed from time to time.

Dorothy Jayne was on the Seattle Opera Board of Directors, and helped start the Everett
Opera Guild among others with the help of a close friend and well know Seattle Opera
figure, Dr. Hans Wolff. Her entrepreneurial talents recruited Dick and Marjorie Ingalls,
creators of the Seattle Tourmap Company, to help support the Seattle Opera Guilds. In
later years she continued her interest in fine art in the portrait class of Nicholas Damascus, a
professor in the Art Department at Seattle University. Among the numerous subjects for her
portraits is included Marv Harshman, former University of Washington Basketball coach.
Dorothy Jayne Wright’s legacy as an artist, teacher and arts supporter lives on through the
Dorothy Jayne Foundation. Since 1997 this foundation has been fostering and supporting the
performing arts and artists in the local area. If you are interested in finding out more about

Sanford Wright Sr.

Dedicated Volunteer of America Supporter
There are any number of ways to describe Sanford Wright Sr; generous, selfless, dedicated
to community service, rooter of Husky basketball and local sports, loyal to commitments
and friends and sensitive to families and individuals in need. Those that had the privilege
of knowing Sanford knew he was a man of honor and value. His word was his bond and
all that was needed was a handshake to seal any deal. His word was “money in the bank”.
Sanford Wright Sr. was a quiet leader with a servant attitude who always promoted others
and gave others credit. He purposely avoided the limelight and praise.
I appreciate this opportunity to share with you some memories about the special times and
adventures that I enjoyed with Sanford Wright Sr. who was a Volunteers of America Board
member for over 30 years and a valued contributor to my professional career.

My name is Gilbert Saparto and I served as the President/CEO at four separate
appointments with Volunteers of America from June of 1965 to the time of my retirement
in March of 2005. The history that follows will acknowledge and pay tribute to Sanford
Wright Sr. who was my boss, mentor, friend and a valued member of the greater Everett
Community.
Sanford Wright Sr. was a dedicated man who loved his family and also made time to
become involved and serve many people, businesses, associations and clubs in the Everett
community. As years rolled on, two became major loves of his life, the Everett Rotary and
the Volunteers of America (VOA). Before I relate some of my experiences with Sanford
Wright Sr. at VOA, I would like to share one about a Rotary project that stands out to me
and that exemplifies his character and value to many.
As many of you know, Sanford Wright Sr. was a well-respected and highly competent
contractor in the greater Everett area. There was a fund raising project for the Everett High
School Shop Program that was sponsored in the name of the Everett Rotary Club. At his
own financial risk, Sanford created a hands-on learning experience for several wood shop
students from Everett High School. He taught, encouraged and coached them as they
built a single-family home overlooking the Snohomish Valley on Broadway just off 52nd
Street. The project was successful and the beautiful three-bedroom home was sold for a
profit. The profit, in full, was turned over to and benefited Everett High School’s Shop
Program. The students involved benefited greatly as they gained valuable knowledge about
the construction process, increased their carpentry skills, and learned true work ethics
while building the home. The Everett Rotary Club also benefited through exposure and
community awareness of this project. Only a few people knew that Sanford was so deeply
involved in this project and that was the way he wanted it; always giving credit to others - an
example of his servant attitude.
The VOA had four major building construction projects from 1987 through the late
1990’s. Sanford Wright Sr. personally took charge and became the “clerk of the works”

on all those projects. There is no question in my mind, that from start to finish on all
those projects, Sanford’s involvement provided VOA with quality design, wonderful
workmanship and facilities that will serve people in need long into the future.
In 1978, the VOA had a budget of $ 350,000+ and provided five program services,
Food Bank, Summer Camp, Developmental Disabilities Life Skills Training, Men’s
Rehabilitation Workshop/Shelter, and several Thrift Stores. Sanford Wright Sr. was one
of 20 Board members who met quarterly and worked closely with the Executive Director to
help manage the services and business affairs of the VOA. In that year, Jan Rose Healey,
then Executive Director of Everett VOA, died suddenly of a heart attack. Prior to the
appointment of a replacement by the National Headquarters of VOA, the Board stepped
up to help manage the VOA. With board chair Ethel Flowers in the lead, Sanford worked
with fellow board members like Park McLean and Harold Gunderson to keep services
operating until a new Executive Director could be found.
In 1978, I had been working as an Executive Director with VOA for 13 years. My wife,
Janette, and I had committed ourselves to the organization in July of 1965 and had worked
together since that time. Volunteers of America, which was started by husband and wife,
Ballington and Maude Booth, has always greatly valued the husband and wife team and
the family. Many leaders within the organization joined as husband and wife together
to serve their communities. When Janette and I began our service, we were encouraged
and enriched by the couples who shared their love and experience with us. We had
encountered many adventures with VOA since our first appointment to Tacoma, WA in
1965. Subsequent appointments in San Diego, CA and Portland, OR readied us for the
challenges ahead.
The National Office of VOA appointed Janette and I as Co-Directors of the Everett Branch
in October of 1978. I assumed the functions of the Executive Director of the organization
and Janette headed up the financial operations. My association with Sanford Wright Sr.
began at that time.

The first few months of my administration were difficult for both the Board and I,
primarily because the style of my leadership was dramatically different than that of the
previous management. I was not a laid back leader and I had a hands on, take-charge
aggressive style. After one particularly contentious Board meeting Sanford Wright Sr.
befriended me and suggested that we go to lunch the following day. That day Sanford
became my mentor and my friend. I soon found that my relationship with the Board
had changed for the good and I am sure Sanford worked behind the scenes to make that
possible.
In the months and years to follow, Sanford personally introduced me to his extensive
circle of friends, both private and public, community networks and organizations that
could support the growth and services of the VOA. Needless to say those contacts and
connections stimulated tremendous growth for VOA. By the time I retired, VOA had
grown from providing five program services to providing over twenty, had increased
the budget from $ 350,000 to over $ 17,000,000.00 and had increased the number of
individual and families helped from the hundreds to over a hundred thousand. Sanford
was of course pleased with the growth of services and the budget professionally but actually
received more personal satisfaction and pleasure from the knowledge of what that growth
meant to the lives of the individuals and families served. Again this is a tribute to and an
example of his concern for others and for the community’s well being.
I had the opportunity of spending some quality time with Sanford in his final days. You
would think he would be talking about his accomplishments and friendships over the years
but no, he talked about his family. He was particularly moved to hear that his son Sanford
Wright Jr. had given a slide presentation of Sanford Sr.’s life at his beloved Rotary Club.
He repeatedly requested the story and loved hearing over and over about that presentation.
He talked about missed opportunities with his family and how he could have been a better
“loving” husband and father. How many of us feel as he did? He wasn’t fully satisfied with
his community service because he thought he could have done more.
