Dividing w i th the Big 7 (called this because the enclosure looks like a large 7)

Using the Big 7 in division can be help ful because you can use LANDMARK NUMBERS to

solve your p r oblem . It is helpful to rem e mber th at, just like m u ltip licati on is repeated addition,

    DIVISION IS REPE ATED S U B T RACTION .

Divisor The num ber you are dividing by

    Quotient T h e answer

Dividend The num ber you are dividing

Here are the steps to tak e when usin g the Big 7 :

    1. Divide : Ask yourself, What is the highest m u ltiple

    of the diviso r tha t will g o into th e dividend ?

Hint: Use L ANDM ARK NUM BERS: W ill it go in

10 tim es? 20 tim es? Etc.

    2. Multiply

the num bers. W r ite the equation on the

outside of the 7 to help you keep track of your work.

    3. Subtract the am ount .

    4. Repeat this process until your rem a inder can no longer

    be divided by the divisor.

    5. Add up the num b ers of the groups you were able to divide.

This is your answer, or the quotient.

Notice how the divisor (6) is consistently written

as a factor on the outside of the Big 7.
