Call to order – 5:00PM

Smith welcomed members and reviewed minutes of last meeting, which was advisory kick-off in October. Questions were raised about Cascades continued involvement with AYES/NATEF. Smith explained the benefits to cost advantage and group agreed continuation was in our best interest.

 





Item 1 Tour on new AutoLab

Smith toured the group through the AutoLab and explained the training program, the use of training modules and the grading process. The group then viewed the steering/suspension trainer and the brake trainer in the shop. Smith tells us that the program is progressing well and that he is making good progress towards fully utilizing the AutoLab program. He intends to customize both the maintenance and tech programs for next semester. Smith has also discussed with Fender the possibility of attending the advanced LJ training next year.

 





Item 2 AYES update from Ron Olsen

Ron provided us with a handout of the years AYES activities and spoke to group about:
1. Job shadowing – should start in January and include all potential AYES interns. Smith will arrange.
2. Hiring fair - a system of getting all potential interns and employers together at the same time in the same place to expedite the placement process. It will be held at Shoreline CC this year.
3. AYES/NATEF Exit Exam – an exam for auto students that has been developed by AYES and NATEF to measure the success of individual students. The exams are based on the ASE certification exams and can be taken in the 8 NATEF certification areas. Smith will implement advanced seniors participating in the exit exams this year. Fender expressed enthusiasm for the exams as they can help with the state mandated audit process in that we can prove effectiveness of the program by students taking and passing a national certification test.


 





Item 3 – District Report by Carl Fender

Carl discussed state wide education funding cutbacks due to state budget shortfalls and cautioned the committee to be prepared for severe belt tightening. Smith and the committee agreed that we are in good shape due to last year’s expenditures and a limited ability to generate income through our Skill USA club.

 





Item 4 – Skills USA Club

Smith reported that the programs Skills USA club met for the 1st time last week and elected officers. The club also discussed the programs budget and elected participants for the competition at SLCC.

 





Item 5 – District Website

Smith reported that the district will be video taping some classroom activities for publishing on the district CTE website. Smith and Fender also discussed the development of a program website. Smith will pursue this.

 





Item 6 – Donation Engine Trainer

Gene Kernan reports that he may have access to a Subaru engine trainer located in Portland. Various methods of shipping were discussed and Kernan will report back to Smith the dimensions and weight and Smith will investigate transportation options.
