Meeting was called to order at 5:30 PM.
1st Agenda Item – report on NATEF recert by Smith – Recert process was successful Smith reported that he received official confirmation from NATEF and that we were unconditionally recertified. Smith suggested that committee to the program review at the next and last meeting for this school year as required by NATEF. Jack Pennington suggested students do a safety/shop housekeeping review periodically and Smith has implemented this.
2nd Agenda Item – report on LJ/Klein training systems that Smith and Fender reviewed in Kansas City. Overall both Smith and Fender felt it was a very good program that would allow Cascade to accommodate all levels of learners together, thus filling all classes regardless of student schedules. Cost is a factor and Fender will review options and viability when the student numbers for next school year are in.
3rd Agenda Item – Smith reported on program progress. He is attempting to make the program more attractive to all students by such techniques as making is more self directed/self study and to have a greater level of options for students unable to complete the more difficult levels. He is currently using a combination of CDX and AYES curriculum to achieve this, but reports that the administration/paperwork/grading system is very difficult. Smith reported that Les Schwab Silver Lake has donated a used John Bean wheel balancer to the program that requires service. Smith has called the service repair people to look at it. Smith has contacted Hunter Equipment for a quote on a Wheel Alignment Machine and is waiting for a revised quotation for submission to Fender. Smith reported that Mike Plumb managed to fix the Ammco brake lathe so we will not need to purchase a new one.
4th Agenda Item – Smith and Pennington are planning to attend several middle school career days and will coordinate on which ones Pennington can help with. Smith will get the calendar to Pennington tomorrow. Suggestions were to bring ex-student employees and maybe a vehicle.
5th Agenda Item – Job Shadows. Smith and Olsen will visit dealerships in March for a follow-up to their October visits to encourage participation in AYES and to schedule some Job Shadows. Smith will prepare a list of students who want to shadow and contact local dealerships to request shadow opportunities. Kernan and Pennington have both said they will be able to Shadow interested students.
6th Agenda Item – AYES calendar and update. Olsen has reported that Cascade has been re-instated on the AYES website and Smith can now update all of the school info. Smith will complete the audit forms and submit. Olsen congratulated Smith on achieving 2 recerts in 2 years (Shorewood and Cascade).
7th Agenda Item Open Discussion – Smith is attending the Puget Sound Automotive Skills Competition at Shoreline CC with 3 student contestants on Feb 15th. Smith spoke with Fluke Corporation Donations officer and reported that he has requested a number of meters and test equipment for donation. He will follow up with this. Neill brought 8 meters, 3 infrared thermometers, and some components to donate to the program. Smith reported that he is scheduled to take Car Quest training through Accurate Auto and that Bob from SLCC is setting him up for Honda on-line training. Kernan reported that Subaru will not authorize instructors to use their training system but that GM is working on a program for instructors and will keep us advised.
