Olsen introduced members and purpose of meeting. Purpose is to inform local instructors of ongoing and proposed changes to AYES, NATEF and ASE procedures and discuss issues pertaining to us all, agenda’s were distributed.
Item 1 – Student ID numbers. ASE wants all auto students to register with ASE using last 4 digits of their SSN. Members concerned about using this id, alternatives were discussed (school id numbers ect.) and issues of legalities and district policies were mentioned. Olsen will investigate with ASE
Item 2 – NATEF Standards – Olsen distributed a chart indication the current NATEF task list and proposed changes to the standards and task list as discussed at the summer conference. The proposed new standards will reflect a higher emphasis for HS students on maintenance and repair as opposed to diagnosis and higher level repair. Members discussed and agreed that current task list is virtually undoable in a conventional HS setting and agreed that change is in order. ASE has proposed rewriting standards in 2012.
Item 3 – Honda Express Service On-Line Certified training – Richie attended the training in Portland over summer and reported on process. Confusion at this time over certification process for students from Honda. Smith reports he intends to try program with select students over winter and spring and will report at that time. Smith will put topic on his agenda for Advisory Meeting in Dec and discuss with Bob B. from SLCC Honda Pact to clarify and report at that time.
Item 4 – Student Certification – Discussion of on-going need to have students certified in areas of auto for Federal and State requirements. Areas students currently certified in are SP2 safety training, Lift Safety, ASE end of program testing, AC Delco, Valvoline, Tech Prep and Identifix. Group discussed need to have instructors and students keep records of all certifications achieved.
Item 5 – Instructor Tech Training – Ron recommends ASE training expo at south center in Feb 24-26. Smith/DelPuerto reported on last year’s expo and recommended it as well.
Item 6 – End of Program Test NATEF – Olsen reported on changes proposed and costs. Current cost is $15.00 per student for current test window (Dec/Jan and May/June). Instructors asked Olsen to propose to ASE that schools be charged flat rate (like SP2) so they can afford to test more students.
Item 7 – AYES progress report – Olsen needs everyone to update their ayes info on the website for record and reporting purposes. Olsen attended PSADA meeting this am and dealer principles and confused as to why numbers (interns) are low. Instructors feel that although GM’s and Owners are enthusiastic the enthusiasm fades at the SM level and interns are very difficult to place. Possibly better communication between GM’s and SM’s would help.
PSADA Survey – Ron distributed 255 surveys to dealerships and received only 9 back. The survey asked questions about AYES interns, do dealers take them, why and why not. Proudlove suggested Olsen resend it to us so we can review.
Meeting was adjourned 5:15 PM.
