Discussion of local photography and graphic arts programs:

Ralph Portillo explained changes in the highly acclaimed photography and graphic arts program at Seattle Central Community College. The photography program currently has a two-year waiting list of interested students. Students must apply with a portfolio. On acceptance, students must purchase $10,000 in camera equipment. The program is intended to start from the basics and provide a rigorous program that culminates with marketing classes and a business plan so that students are exceptional photographers who also have the skills and background in how to start a business. Increasingly, students with less technical knowledge in photography and computer software use are falling behind in class. This makes a portfolio demonstrating skills in these areas more important to incoming students.

Ralph offered to assist with teacher requests to look into field trip opportunities to the school and for direction on how to develop student portfolios in class that would resemble the standards for portfolios used for entrance to Seattle Central Community College.

    Discussion of current professional trends:

Video continues to be a greater expectation for photography professionals and still camera makers are providing an increasing number of high-end equipment for producing video using hybrid still cameras. Ralph Portillo shared examples of professional cameras, sound gear, and lighting resources that are quickly becoming common tools for photographers.

Eric Archer added that the advances in equipment do not take away from a strong background in photography basics being essential for success in the professional world. Fundamentals of exposure and composition are still needed for a student to successfully create professional images in various lighting environments.
