Toured Rental Shop
Light Demo- New portable light kits. Many of the schools are going for portable light for such events as sports and news journalism. The trend to cooler lights was also talked about as they are much safer for kids to work with.
Toured Lighting Sales
Demo LED light kits
Looked at the new fluorescent light kits and accessories they have- these are the same kinds of light that Jackson and Cascade have recently purchased.
Compared tungsten lights to newer green lighting technology.
We also talked about color balance, light temperature and means for adjusting these qualities via gels, scrims and reflectors.
Toured Camera Sales
We looked at the variety of cameras available and the printing facilities. Also talked about renting versus buying and the good deals students can take on weekend rentals. You can rent a 2000 camera for the weekend at a day rate. Great if you are not sure what you want.
Topics of discussion
Convergence of still and video photography seemed to big talk of the pros. Many of the employees in sales as well as rental mentioned this trend for the next 2-5 years.
How to get into the lighting industry- join your schools dram club/class and work on the stage crew. There is no “real” program for study. You work your way through experience.
Using lights in the classroom
Ralph volunteered to come in for demos
Hot lights vs cold lights- the newer fluorescent lights are much safer for our students to learn on.
Storyboarding with stills- examples were shown. A great way to use still photography for the visualization process in filmmaking.
Printing large format color photos- Glazers has very large color printers for use in printing larger format color pictures
New plastic cameras for photo students- very cool tool for learning photography. A lot like pin hole cameras.
