The focus of this meeting was the two year plan:
We reviewed with the committee the purpose and current state of the plan and then asked for input form the community members. We brought up the question “What do you want from a new employee?” It was unanimous that everyone wanted someone with good interpersonal skills and a good working understanding of the fundamentals of the job they are applying for. Community members said that they would teach them the more detailed jobs; they just want someone who can work with others and have a good basic understanding of the technology. We decided to add the word “Fundamentals” to our 2 year plan under curriculum development.
Under Program Marketing we talked about how to make the classes fun but at the same time continue to keep the rigor in the content. We all mentioned that we have a lot of students who join our classes and then soon learn that it’s not just roaming the campus with cameras. Many ideas were circulated but nothing seemed to float to the top. The general consensus was that the more cameras we can get into student hands the better.
Under the career component everyone agreed that we need to continue stressing the SCAN skills. It was also brought up that Internships where the best way to give students that real world experience. Glen Sayes said that typically has several interns a year for six weeks. The problem was brought up about some legal issues with not paying interns.
Under the Advisory Committee heading we talked about getting more community members to join the group. More members from the broadcast field and graphic design field where the ones we mentioned. The big idea under Advisory Committee was the teaming up with the Mukilteo School Districts Advisory committee with ours. Glen Sayes also sits on their committee and said that we are both talking about the same things and we would have a lot to offer each other in terms of community members and collaboration.
We also spent some time talking about “Green Trends” in the field and none of the community members said there was much of anything going on in their business.
We talked about some of the new gear that is coming out, specifically the Canon D5 Mark II digital camera. We noted that the line between still photography and videoography is beginning to blur with cameras that are capable of performing both functions equally.
We then thanked our community members for their time and Lauren gave them their certificates. We ended with Bill and Rick giving a tour of their rooms and showing them some students work.
