Math-how do you use math in your job?

Dee (greenhouse)-chemical application, sowing a crop-length of time, potting benches-number of flats/number of packs/number of plants.

 

Linda (floral)-profit/loss, mark-up (making arrangements with the correct amount of product in them & pricing items in the store)

 

John (Hort Teacher)-geometry, volume, square feet, graphing

 

Tammy (Floral Teacher)-writing a proposal for special orders, weddings, corporate, interior plantscaping, etc., size of arrangement to it’s environment for proper scale.

 

 

Updates from the Industry

Horticulture-endangered species focus, salmon habitats important, collapse of the bee colonies, Hobo spider being researched more, is it good/bad, Alpine plants, Native Plants are important to the area-less H2O, less fertilizer, less overall care.

 

 

Additional advisory member from the hort industry

Possibilities: a horticulturist from the city of Everett, Salvadorian in Snohomish, WSU extension.

 

What would you expect a new hire to be able to do?

Linda (floral)-water plants correctly, basic design (good stem placement), make a bow, pricing of arrangements, care & handling of cut flowers (processing), computer skills.

 

Dee (greenhouse)-watering of plants, weeding (id them from regular plants), transplanting, propagation, plant ID.

 

OTHER

John (Hort Teacher) Cascade students to work with Episcopal Church across from school to create & maintain a “Pea Patch” to grow vegetables for homeless.

 

Tammy (Floral Teacher) Advanced students will go to Legion Park to make evergreen wreaths in December.

 

Both teachers shared a brief overview of their curriculum.
