Tour of Greenhouse Facilities at Cascade High School

We saw first-hand what shape the greenhouses and potting shed are in. Jeannie gave us a thorough explanation of house these facilities are used in coordination with her Horticulture classes. She explained the positives and the negatives which were reiterated in her power point presentation.

Jeannie’s Power Point Presentation on Greenhouses

Jeannie explained further her vision for the greenhouse possibilities as well as the struggles she has now with minor repairs. Upgrades in the following areas are needed: gravel floor needs to be upgraded to a cement slab (partial or full slab), gravel floor has no weed barrier, they are having rodent problems (rats get in and eat up plants), wooden plant benches need to be upgraded to metal benches because of rotting, equipment replacement to support crop production and facility maintenance (rakes, clippers, hoses, nozzles, brooms, hoes, and shovels.) She also expressed some concerns related to safety that need to be looked at closer by maintenance or safety inspectors. The structures are in good shape, but the interior is high maintenance (weeding the floor & repairing PVC tubing often), as well as some tables are unstable and need a better configuration.

    2-Year Plan Review & Explanation

CHS-Horticulture Equipment Needs-Jeannie reviewed of all greenhouse related items as above with the committee as well as the repair/replace tools & small equipment as above, review & order new text book for Pre-Vet Science class. Jeannie shared the book with the committee. Faye, who works at Phoenix Central Laboratory as Medical Director & Clinical Pathologist, reviewed the text and made her recommendation to Jeannie since she works in the animal science field. We also needed to add Industry & Safety Standards to our 2-Year Plan for the greenhouse facilities at CHS.

EHS-Horticulture Equipment Needs-Andy reviewed our 2-Year Plan with the committee. It includes wheelbarrows, handtools and small equipment (some of which has been provided by EHS Maintenance for use on school grounds as students work to beautify the EHS campus), Tissue Culture lab set up and baywindows or attached narrow growing room on South Side of the science building (this seems like a dream, but it is needed majorly since students are limited to classroom space only except on days they go to Legion Park for greenhouse experience in cooperation with the Everett Parks & Rec.

EHS-Floral Design Equipment Needs-Tammy reviewed our 2-Year Plan with the committee. It includes a color printer for the classroom to print photographs of arrangements for use by students and classroom usage, 10 stools for tall desks in classrooms (so the tall desks can be better used for regular classroom time as well as designing), 2 grow lights to add to an existing shelf in the classroom (for houseplants used in the classroom starting next fall “interior landscaping” with advanced students), 2 computers for classroom research (advanced students mostly do research on such subjects as Floral Associations, Flowers In-The-News, where flowers are native to around the world, etc-this is an area that Tammy would like to expand)

    Conclusions

Sheila shared about the Field Trip she attended with Andy’s students last Saturday to the Mt Vernon area. They went to Skagit Valley Gardens, B&B Tissue Culture Lab, The Tulip Fields and the WSU Research Station. This is an annual Saturday Field Trip that the EHS Horticulture students have a chance to go on. It is an incredible time to not only see the beautiful tulips fields but to learn about bulb production and tissue cultures.
