In attendance: | John Romann, Tammy Price, Dee Drake, Sharon Collman, Craig Callies, Lauren Hadley |
Subject: | Floriculture 2 yr plan (ways to enhance career interest) |
Discussion: |
Tammy explained that she devotes a section of her curriculum to careers and career exploration in floriculture. Sharon suggested a job shadow program however Tammy explained that would be a challenge for some students due to limited transportation. Further, Tammy stated that there are no updated video presentations for floriculture careers. Sharon suggested that maybe a class project for students to create a video on horticulture/floriculture careers would give students a hands on experience as they proceeded to seek out all careers/activities associated with horticulture/floriculture. Sharon will be putting together a presentation on the various horticulture career and present to the Everett and Cascade horticulture classes prior to years end. |
Action/Proposal: | John and Tammy to investigate the possibility of each class doing a video/formal presentation on horticulture/floriculture careers |
Subject: | Floriculture 2 year plan (practicing/developing leadership skills) |
Discussion: |
Lauren opened discussion on this subject with the question; what makes a good leader. Neutral, fair, consistent, good listener, team player/motivator, initative, were some of the skills all agreed present in a great leader. Tammy uses the practice of placing different students in charge of different activities and rotating responsibility with different activities. Also, make an extra effort to involve the “quiet and challenged” students to lead activities. Sharon and Craig noted that in their day to day experience being bilingual is a real plus today and that we need to impress this on our bilingual students. |
Action/Proposal: | Ensure that all students are given a variety of leadership roles throughout the practical learning activities within the curriculum |
Subject: | Floriculture 2 year plan (Industry/Post Secondary Connections) |
Discussion: |
Sharon identified several new area’s that are aligned with the formulation of new green industries, ie land restoration to native plants, green walls and rain gardens and the ever increasing use of natural materials in the control of plant insects and diseases. Further, there is an ever increasing interest in container gardening |
Action/Proposal: | Tammy and John investigate these new concepts and where applicable, incorporate these innovations into their curriculums |
