Attendees: Murray Reid, Nick Alvanos, Kimi Shigitani, John Monroe, Carl Fender, Lauren Hadley, Becky Ballbach, JoAnne Buiteweg
Murray called the meeting to order at 10:00 a.m. and invited attendees to introduce themselves.
Video Carl shared the new CTE video with members of the committee and shared with them that the purpose of the video is to market CTE programs to eighth-grade students and their parents. This is based on research that King county conducted and they found out that students register for classes because their parent encourage them to do so.
Comments on the video were:
Great! – A good overview of the programs and it highlights the benefits to basic education and the CTE connection.
JoAnne suggested it could be running on a continuous loop while parents are waiting for their conferences.
John reference that article the Herald about the Mayor’s Youth Achievement Awards and the connection that there are many option to get in to the workforce, not just college and the video highlights both.
CE demonstrations of learning JoAnne introduced her question to the Council by saying that the most valuable CE projects are career or intense hobby based. While in many cases students can create an example of what they’ve learned, for some career exploration they cannot, i.e. brain surgery. She asked the Council what is a product that can capture student learning – what do you want to see from them?
Murray – An effective proposal – a viable solution to a problem that shows their expertise.
Nick – Demonstrate that the research they have gathered has come from a credible source. Also, what you learn takes you back to what they entry level position is to get to the career goal. Review the application, understand the background checks and that what you do now and in the next few years could affect that background check and keep you from getting the position you want.
Kimi – Develop a plan – what you plan to do based on what you’ve found out and why you plan do to that. Also, a self reflective piece, based on what I’ve learned, what does this mean to me.
Manufacturing update Carl reported that a group from the district attended a meeting that overviewed Project Lead the Way. The next step is to identify a steering committee to help the district identify what a manufacturing program would look like for Everett Public Schools.
John said he would like to participate and can provide names from industry that could also serve. We’ll need to get a broad representation of groups because manufacturing is more than just aerospace in Snohomish County.
Kimi suggested involved the Center of Excellence.
John, Nick and Murray each in their own words reminded the council that many employers are looking for the soft skills and claim that they can teach everything.
Lauren will schedule a meeting with Carl, John and Sue Ambler (or designee) to identify who should be at the table and to schedule out how the steering committee will move forward with their work.
Two Year Plan Lauren walked the council through the two-year plan. All members agreed that it was an ambitious plan and it looked good.
