Attendees: Terri Drayer, Lynn Munoz, John Monroe, Angel Lopez, Amy Purcell, Carl Fender and Lauren Hadley

Welcome – Terri welcomed the committee and reviewed the agenda.

    Employability Skills Committee Update

Carl updated the council that the employability subcommittee could not come up with a common date to meet. At this time the district will keep an eye on what others are doing and keep this concept in mind for future program development.

The committee offered input on their knowledge up what is happening currently.

Amy: Not much is happening with the work readiness credential. It is in pilot testing but the WDC did not participate due to cost. Everything about the credential is taking longer than expected.

Carl: We want to keep in mind what we want to be doing for our program sin regards to employability. What is measurable and keep an eye on what is out there for our students.

Amy: One resource is called “work keys” it is similar, however it is not nationally validated and work readiness is. Information is available at: http://www.act.org/workkeys/

Terri: Boeing is backing away from pre-hire assessment because of the liability on the company. It is not demonstrating accurately what employees can do and actually has adverse affects.

Amy: Work readiness is making sure that it works for all populations.

Angel: Assess basic communication and make sure students can keep the jobs they get. Matching skills to jobs is importation with our clients.

Lynn: What about a portfolio based resume?

    School Board Presentation

Carl went through the board presentation and the council made a few recommendations.

    Two-year plan

Carl went through the two-year plan. The council added that Workforce Explorer has more up to date employability information.

Business and marketing programs – how can we help them grow?

Carl updated the council that the district is seeing declining enrollment for the last four years in the business and marketing programs but is seeing an increase is FASCE, programming and computer courses. The council brainstormed about why this might be happening and some possible solutions.

    · Too many choices
    · OUS becomes an employability issue
    · Data perceptions – cool then, not cool now
    · Not that glamorous
    · Instructor popularity
    · Marketing at EvCC switched to live client to make the program more hands on and up to date. That has helped.
    · Academic rigor versus a break in student schedule
    · Sexy factor
    · Old thinking by teachers
    · Get out of the book
    · Student participation in pieces
    · Don’t offer everything every quarter

    Advisory recruitment

Lauren will e-mail the council for their ideas to add to the table.

John suggested Corie Electronics, they are relocating 600 employees to the area and will want to be involved either on the GAC or the Manufacturing cmte.
