Sports Medicine Advisory Board Meeting

Attendees: Carl Fender, Brenda Black, Jamie Ablutz, Traci Theriault, Kirsten Harvey
Meeting was called to order at 6:40 AM. Traci was introduced to the group, she is an RN who is the school nurse for Jackson HS.
Check-in on developments since Feb: Physical Therapy Assistants and Athletic Trainers both had bills passed and signed into law that they will now be licensed in the state of Washington, providing state oversight for the first time. They will go into effect summer of '08.
Discussion on the 2-yr plan, Carl explained that he is paying much more attention to these now and they need to be very specific. WASL support will be important as long as we have underclass students in our classes.
Leadership components are issues that need to be addressed. OSPI does not recognize the Washington Vocational Sports Medicine Assoc (WVSMA) as a viable leadership forum as there is not yet a National competition. Skills USA has so far declined to add Sports Med to their programming. Carl will speak with others at his ESD meeting next week.
Carl, Kirsten and Brenda will meet next week, possibly 5/22, to finalize 2 yr plan and work on common assessments.
Next meeting will be the kickoff dinner in Fall, ’07.
