ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES

Date: November 12, 2008
Time: 12 PM
Location: Sequoia High School

In attendance: Janice Henning, Rob Ramsburgh, Tom Braaten, Susan Miller, Lauren Hadley, John Barhanovich, Judy Karber

Jan Wise

Subject: Welcome

Discussion: John opened the meeting and welcomed the members. Lunch

was served.

Subject: Volunteering – Community Involvement

Discussion: Janice has been with the WBL Advisory committee since it began in 1985. Janice advised the committee that she is from family

that has always believed in giving back to the Community you live in.

Janice is a former teacher and has volunteered in many of our classrooms

in addition to be an Advisory committee member.

Tom also has been a member of this committee since it began and feels

that giving back to the community is also very important. He is also on

the Board of Directors for Junior Achievement, etc.

Susan Miller agrees with the importance of Community involvement. Susan

Has employed many of Judy Karber’s G.O.A.L. students at Joann Fabrics.

Rob Ramsburgh has been a former teacher and understands how important the educational program is to our Community. Rob has worked with many

Everett schools students at the Events Center.

Lauren Hadley gave an overview of the Advisory committees in our District

and advised the committee of their important work. One example was when our committee addressed the OSHA and WISHA requirements on our State forms. They addressed the safety requirements in a way that removed the liability from the Work Based Learning Teachers when they complete their worksite visits. Lauren also mentioned that the Manufacturing programs in the Everett Public schools was the result of our General Advisory Committee’s work and input. John, Lauren, Judy and Jan thanked our committee for their work and continued support of the Everett Public Schools Work Based Learning program.

Subject: Business Outlook/Economy

Discussion: Janice advised the committee on how the economy has affected her business. They had a very slow October and changed their work hours

to a four day week. However, they have large business orders with the State to provide numerous State forms and this adds greatly to their business.

Tom advised the committee on the banking industry. Bank of America

has remained strong at this time and acquired Merril Lynch.

Rob advised the committee that the numbers are somewhat down at the Events center. He said the economy definitely “affects” the entertainment

budget of families when recession hits.

Susan said Joann Fabrics has not noticed any significant slow down. In times of economy troubles, people still make their own gifts, etc. so business

has remained good at this time.

Subject: Work Based Learning State forms

Discussion: John explained to the committee that students who are enrolled

in the work based learning program receive .5 credit for every 180 hours of work. Each 180 hours these students must have a new learning plan outlining

their goals for that period. John provided the committee with the forms we currently use and explained our plan to revise and implement new ones.

The committee looked at the forms, and after lengthy discussions, advised

the teachers on the form they would prefer as Business members. The WBL

Teachers will continue to work on the form and bring it to the February

Meeting for more discussion and approval.

Subject: Other agenda items

Discussion: Judy advised the committee that her program is in need

of judges on December 8th at 9 and 11AM for the “Job

Interview” assignment with her students in her classroom.

Subject: Adjourn

John adjourned the meeting at 1 PM.
