ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES


 
Date: February 23, 2005
Time: 12 PM – 1:30 PM
Location: Everett High School
 
In attendance: Tom Braaten, Kathy Dostie, Carl Fender, John Barhanovich, Judy Karber, and Jan Wise


 

Subject: Welcome

Discussion: John opened the meeting and welcomed the members. Kathy Dostie of Workforce Development Council has joined our committee replacing Kevin Harrigan who has moved to California. Tamra Bradford resigned from the committee. John distributed copies of the minutes from the previous meeting. Tom Braaten moved to approve the minutes and Kathy Dostie seconded. All members approved the minutes.

 

 

Subject: WBL Framework Update

Discussion. Carl explained to the committee the Frameworks curriculum that all CTE teachers have developed for the classes they teach and continue to update. Carl has been supervising the CTE staff with ongoing workshops to update the assessments content. Judy explained to the committee the work that WBL teachers have been working on at these meetings and advised the committee that when the revisions are complete, the teachers will bring the updated framework to the committee for discussion, corrections and approval.

 

Subject: Industry Standard Questions for Discussion

Discussion: John advised the committee that the following questions need to be discussed with the Business members.

How is math specifically used in your profession and how can use of math be translated into a student exercise?

Answers: Understanding cash flow, how loans are repaid, Business economics, blue prints. A student exercise could involve Junior Achievement. Tom explained that a business person comes directly to the classroom to teach units to the students. John and Jan have both utilized Junior Achievement in their classes and said the students benefited from these experiences.





What Communication methods do you use in your workplace?





What denotes professionalism in your office?

Answers: E-mail is one of the main communication methods and using this in

a professional manner was discussed. Personal use, jokes etc. are not allowed as outlined in the Business Standards of code and conduct.

Attendance is an item of priority in the businesses. Dress code was discussed and how “Casual Fridays” has been implemented in various businesses. The business members advised the teachers to continue teaching students the importance of “appropriate dress attire and the relevance to the world of work”.

 

Subject: Work Based Learning Orientation Form

Discussion: John distributed a copy of the required orientation form that WBL teachers give to employers for completion and signature. John encountered an employer who would not sign the form for liability reasons. After discussion, the committee agreed that the form needs to be revised. The Work Based Learning teachers will revise this form and bring it back to the Advisory Committee for approval.

 

Comments/Concerns: Judy advised the committee that she is in need of judges for various events relating to her class. The members said they would check their schedules and report back to her.

 

With the resignation of Tamra Bradford, the committee will need to replace her. Judy provided the name of a Fred Meyer employee that works with her students and the committee will contact her.

 

 

Next Meeting Date: May 18, 2006

Adjournment: John adjourned the meeting and thanked the members for their valuable committee participation.
