Judy and Jan explained the Math assignments the Work Based Learning students complete involving real life budgeting assignments and math computations for hours worked and taxes. The committee strongly agreed that math is used extensively in all fields in the world of work.

Subject: Article “How to Bring Our Schools Out of the 20th Century

Discussion: After reading the above article, the committee discussed

what the students need to know about the world, thinking outside the box in the workplace, researching problems and how important teamwork is in the workplace and in the global economy. Tom commented that this article is accurate and he agrees with a lot of the ideas listed, but also stated that it is overwhelming to make so many changes in a school system where current patterns are engrained. Tom and Janice agreed that this is a big challenge for all educators.

Subject: Announcements

Discussion: Jan distributed a copy of an article from the Everett Herald featuring Janice Henning and her outstanding volunteer work in the community and her many years of service with the Work Based Learning

Advisory committee. Jan stated that Janice and Tom have been members of this committee since it originated in 1986. Jan also shared an article on students Maria & Stacey Thompson receiving the 2007 Mayor’s Achievement Award. Maria has been a student in the Work Based Learning program at EHS. She has received credits for completing the Choices class, Volunteer class and the Work experience class.

Jan advised the committee that it was previewed at the CTE staff meeting last Thursday and it is an excellent promotional video. Lauren also stated that it will be shown at our Advisory kick off meeting in the Fall and copies will be available at some time. Jan distributed copies of the CTE booklet that is available to all students and promotes the CTE classes.
