Discussion: Judy Karber opened the meeting and welcomed all members.
Jan reported that John and Kathy had called and would not be able to attend today’s meeting.
Subject: Approval of the Work Based Learning forms
Discussion: This item on the agenda was tabled until the May 10th meeting when all members will be present
Subject: Real Life Math Examples
Discussion: Tom Braaten, Bank of America, discussed the math used in the Commercial banking field. Tom discussed the cash flow schedules and how Washington Mutual is now giving applicants an on-line math test before hiring. Janice Henning, Puget Press, discussed the math concepts the equipment operators use in running the presses. The math skills have to be exact, accurate math. Judy and Jan explained the Math assignments the Work Based Learning students complete involving real life budgeting assignments and math computations for hours worked and taxes. The committee strongly agreed that math is used extensively in all fields in the world of work.
Subject: Article “How to Bring Our Schools Out of the 20th Century
Discussion: After reading the above article, the committee discussed
what the students need to know about the world, thinking outside the box in the workplace, researching problems and how important teamwork is in the workplace and in the global economy. Tom commented that this article is accurate and he agrees with a lot of the ideas listed, but also stated that it is overwhelming to make so many changes in a school system where current patterns are engrained. Tom and Janice agreed that this is a big challenge for all educators.
Subject: Announcements
Discussion: Jan distributed a copy of an article from the Everett Herald featuring Janice Henning and her outstanding volunteer work in the community and her many years of service with the Work Based Learning
Advisory committee. Jan stated that Janice and Tom have been members of this committee since it originated in 1986. Jan also shared an article on students Maria & Stacey Thompson receiving the 2007 Mayor’s Achievement Award. Maria has been a student in the Work Based Learning program at EHS. She has received credits for completing the Choices class, Volunteer class and the Work experience class.
Subject: CTE Video and Booklet
Discussion: Lauren announced to the committee that the CTE department has developed a CTE program video. This video will be available to promote the various programs that CTE offers in the Everett Public Schools. Jan advised the committee that it was previewed at the CTE staff meeting last Thursday and it is an excellent promotional video. Lauren also stated that it will be shown at our Advisory kick off meeting in the Fall and copies will be available at some time. Jan distributed copies of the CTE booklet that is available to all students and promotes the CTE classes.
Subject: WBL Career Leadership Challenge
Discussion: Judy discussed the WBL Career Leadership Challenge day that was held at Warm Beach on March 28th. This leadership conference is an excellent opportunity for students to participate in leadership activities. Jan reported that she and John presented the Job Skills and Math tests and Judy’s students placed high in these competitive events.

Discussion: Judy informed the committee that our next Advisory luncheon meeting will be held on May 10th at EHS. Judy adjourned the meeting at 1:15 PM.
