Janice Henning, Tom Braaten, Rob Ramsburgh, Bethany Ziegler, Lauren Hadley, John Barhanovich, Judy Karber and Jan Wise
Subject: Welcome/Connection to District
Discussion: John opened the meeting and welcomed the members. The Work Based Learning Advisory Business committee members for the 2007-2008 school year are as follows:
Tom Braaten, Bank of America
Janice Henning, Puget Press
Susan Miller, JoAnn Fabrics
Troy Nolden, Safeway
Rob Ramsburgh, Everett Silvertips
Bethany Ziegler, Fred Meyer
Subject: Occupational “Exciting” Trends and School classes that provide Students with entry level skills
Discussion: Janice responded that her employees are the most exciting
part of the printing business. Each employee demonstrates exceptional work ethics and as owners they see that classes such as work based learning and leadership promote responsible employees.
Tom responded that the banking business is seeing volatile times. Bank
Of America is looking at 200,000 layoffs with a 7% decline projected. Development in Snohomish County is almost at a standstill however, the Aerospace Industry is still thriving. Tom was responsible for hiring a
Work Based Learning student from the Everett School District a few
years ago and sees the value of Leadership and Work Based Learning classes.
Bethany, Director of Human Resources at Fred Meyer, has employed students from Judy’s classes. Fred Meyer conducted an associate survey that redirected their focus on “customers being first”. Bethany responded that to be hired at Fred Meyers students should have the following skills:
Be On Time
Good Attendance
Leadership
Sense of Urgency – Good manners, eye contact
Firm Hand Shake
Office apparel
Bethany said Leadership classes promote good employees. Students who have taken Leadership, Deca or Work based Learning demonstrate entry level employability skills.
Rob Ramsburgh, Game Operations Manager from the Silvertips, has hired
Everett School District students as Interns. Jan also has a Silvertip player student enrolled in Work Based Learning for credit. Rob explained the importance of Internships. Even though these are unpaid positions “getting your foot in the door” has proven to be beneficial for experience and for potential hiring. Rob agreed with Bethany’s recommended skills needed for entry level hiring and added the importance of having fun on the job. Rob discussed how important an “Internship” is for a student’s resume - volunteering in a Career Path that is related to a student’s career goal.
Subject: CTE District News
Discussion: Lauren reported on the District’s “on time graduation” plan. Since implementing this program and new staff positions, our graduation rate has improved from 54% to 80%. Lauren also advised the committee that the CTE department has a General Advisory committee that oversees
all Advisory committees. They have recommended that the Everett School District offer a Manufacturing program. Because of this recommendation,
we now have a manufacturing steering committee to proceed with recommendations to implement this class for the 2008-2009 school year.
Subject: Two year Plan
Discussion: Judy Karber distributed copies of the Work Based Learning
Two-year plan and discussed the instructional practices for curriculum, WASL, Career components, Leadership, Industry connections, Program marketing and Advisory committee. Judy explained that the Work Based Learning teachers revisit and update this plan each year and this requires
the Advisory committee members approval.
Subject: For the Good of the Order
Discussion: Judy discussed the Work Based Learning Leadership conference
that will be held at Warm Beach on March 25, 2008. Judy asked each member to check their schedules for availability to be judges for the various events that promote leadership, team building and work skills for our WBL students. This will be a statewide event for Work Based Learning students.
