Currently Microsoft has 4,000 jobs open for those with a computer science degree and by 2020 it is estimated that 1,000,000 computer science jobs will go unfilled. Technology is pervasive in the world today. However, only a tiny fraction of students learn how computers work, or how to create software technology. Computer Science provides a foundation for virtually any career and all our students can benefit from learning the basics. Currently computer science is one of the highest demand, highest wage career pathways but very few students chose this career pathway.
December 9-15 is Computer Science Week which will be recognized by a massive campaign called the Hour of Code. The Hour of Code will encourage
10 million students to try one hour of introductory computer science. Students are able to participate by going to the following website:
http://hourofcode.org
. Another great resource is:
http://code.org/learn
. Currently three of our high schools will be participating in ‘Hour of Code’ at different times during the week in their computer science courses.
