      We are currently in the middle of our FTC season. Several students attended kick-off at the Museum of Flight on September 7. We decided to field two FTC teams this year so that new members would have more opportunities to contribute to the development of their robot. We are currently meeting very Monday and Wednesday until about 6:00 PM. We will add Thursdays in November, and Tuesdays as needed prior to our first FTC competition on 11/23. Several students are learning CAD with Solid Works and programming with LabView or Robot C. We include non-engineering time during our meetings so we can work on team organization as well as plans for award submissions and fundraising. As the FTC season winds down in early January, we will be gearing up for the FRC build season which is four to five days a week through mid-February. During the FTC season we hope to continue to grow our team, and are pleased that we have several ninth graders and more girls on the team this year.

       

      Sorry- that’s not as detailed as Maggie’s but we aren’t as structured as they are. Maybe someday.

       

       

       

      The For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) Robotics team at Jackson High School has set a STEM goal to increase member’s expertise in the engineering world for this coming year.  The team began the year with a competition to encourage girls to take leadership roles by attending the Girls Generation competition on October 12, 2013 at Tahoma Jr. High School.  The team competed with 24 other teams and was awarded the Spirit award for exhibiting spirit and teamwork during the competition.

       

      With the leadership of JHS FIRST Robotics Team and their coach, Maggie Thorleifson, the team continues to reach out to Boeing Engineers and local business to provide workshops for the student members. Thus far they have a number of workshops planned throughout the year as they prepare for their build season. The workshops include the following:

      We have added to the classes above we have added to every meeting an hour devoted to members working in teams to solve an engineering challenge and then present their results to the team.

       

       

       

      To accomplish this feat the team is working with Boeing Engineers and local businesses to provide workshops for the student members.
