Minutes from February 13th meeting

Minutes from February 13, 2013 were approved as written.

Bethal SD (Sue & Curtis)

Sue and Curtis talked about their tour of Bethal school district. They were impressed with the involvement of the industry Reps working side by side with students, and working with instructors bringing actual industry projects that would be in the work place for students to have hands on experiences. Industry has a vested interest in this program in hiring students and building relationships with them. These students are guaranteed interviews, but not jobs. There were two small companies partnering with students and working with them in the classroom. The companies were, Pacific Coast Composites and AIM Aero Space. Skills Inc. provides training for instructors and facilities for staff and equipment for training. Training includes but not limited to soft skills, applied math writing resumes and conducting interviews. Students will receive a certificate outlining the skills that they have experienced.

There was a discussion on externships. Curtis is working on several worksites to involve learning for instructors in the summer months. Curtis talked about worksites that have been a great experience for instructors in the past.

End of Year Program Review (Carl)

Carl shared a document that will be used by general advisory and program advisories to evaluate Career and Technical Education and CTE STEM programs throughout the district. This document will assist in on-site reviews, audits, annual CTE program evaluations, four-year program re-approval and consolidated program reviews evaluation. There are fourteen standards that will identify deficiencies and will be asked to develop a CTE program improvement plan. The advisory group seemed to think this was a good way to look at CTE and CTE STEM programs to insure quality programs throughout Everett Public Schools as a district. This program evaluation aligns with OSPI CTE standards.

Anatomy and Physiology (Erin)

Erin Acheson, instructor from Cascade High School came to talk about her class in Anatomy and Physiology. She is trying to change lecture base learning in the classroom into a more of a working lab environment and bringing in the missing piece of clinical studies to create a good foundation into the health science pathway. Erin would like to bring more community involvement in the classroom. Anatomy and Physiology currently offered at Cascade High School, planning is in place and it is anticipated this program will be at Everett High School in the fall of 2013.

Brian and Erin will work together to send out frameworks to Dayna Eden, (Everett Clinic) to explore options for community involvement.
