Minutes
Welcome & Introductions Those present: John, Monroe, Terri Drayer, Susan Bradshaw, Curtis Takahashi, Robert Sotak, Richard Sander, Brian Day, Carl Fender, Diane Storm, recorder
Minutes from December 19th meeting Minutes were emailed out before the meeting, and a change was made on February’s meeting date. There was a calendar conflict for the next meeting in February. Meeting date was changed from February 20th to February 13th. Location, Educational Service Center C-3. The new meeting date of February 13, 2013 was approved by the group and minutes were then approved.
John Monroe requested that further meeting dates be placed on everyone’s calendar.
CTE STEM WASA Review (handout) – Carl, Bob, Dick
Carl when over the WASA review and there was a group discussion on some of the recommendations. A request was made for the report and recommendations be sent to advisory members with the link to the full report, along with the updated STEM plan. John asked the question on timelines for implementation of the recommendations. This will be a focus at the next meeting for discussion. Some highlights of the discussion were; Rollout of STEM to the community, students and parents. Articulate pathways K-12. Integrated curriculum, how do we make it relevant to students?
Preconceptions (CTE / Science) Bob
Bob and Brian shared a new Physics book, project based and scenario learning. Lessons built around a project and activities. This curriculum will be able to reach students that are not just high achieving students but hands on engaging students raising rigor for all. Curriculum projects for students starting as young as kindergarten.
Manufacturing Technology Certificate – Sue Susan Bradshaw talked about the competences certificate that the Bethal school district is in partnership with AIM. AIM is investing in training to instructors with professional development.
Students will complete areas in competences and will be recognized with completing all areas and receiving a certificate of competency which can be taken into the workforce for employers to know the applicant is work ready. Sue will report back with a report after she looks at the program further.
WAP Legislative Agenda – John
John talked about Washington Aerospace partnership. They are looking at aerospace in general. Focus is on growing a talented workforce; produce more STEM university degree graduates, reform aviation tax regulations. Collaborate between business, labor and government to keep Washington an aerospace center of excellence.
Partnerships Needed - Design Engineer - Heatherwood MS
Carl asked for assistance in setting up a design engineer to come into the classroom to talk to students at Heatherwood MS. John Monroe and Terri Drayer will look into contacting the right person and will contact Carl with some names.
