Welcome & Introductions

Those present: Nick Alvanos, Susan Bradshaw, Sue Ambler, Terri Drayer, John Monroe,

Murray Reid, Brian Day, Robert Sotak, Richard Sander, Carl Fender, Diane Storm, recorder

 





Minutes from May 18th meeting

Minutes were emailed out before the meeting, and approved at the meeting.

 





Advisory Overview

A copy of the flow chart and structure of the roles and purpose was handed out and emailed for discussion. Carl requested for a volunteer for a chairperson. Sue Ambler moved that the volunteer be approved at this meeting in advance so we could move forward as a group when the chairperson was decided. Motion was approved.

 





Advisory Chairperson

John Monroe and Terri Drayer agreed to share the responsibility together, taking advantage of technology for discussing agendas items and other options.

 





Recap of Everett Public Schools Summer STEM Symposium

Thoughts from the group were that Everett Public Schools as a district did a great job getting together College and Business speakers, and students panels which provided high levels of discussion on STEM overviews planting seeds for STEM with other districts, community members and teachers.

     





STEM Board Report

Bob Sotak reported on the STEM board report. Bob stated that Everett Public Schools has made a comment to become a STEM school district with the focus on K-12. Using hands on programs in high schools and middle schools, and a shift on what we do and how we teach.

 

What does it mean to be a STEM district, defining 21st century skills, and a strong understanding of STEM areas and starting early education with our K-12 students.

 





CTE STEM WASA Review

Sue Ambler was on the CTE/STEM WASA review board, and reported to the group on some areas of the CTE/STEM WASA review. The review board looked at areas of

What does STEM look like

What things are working and things that are not working

Equity issues were brought up about classes across the district not being the same in all schools

Resources

Communications at district levels, Administrators, Teachers Councilors and support staff

Equipment, facilities and instruction not being the same in all schools

Program of work needs to move forward

A recommendation that all staff answer a questionnaire to measure a base line for data

 





New proposed course offerings for next year (2013-2014)

 Bio Tech, Robotics, Engineering the Future

The group discussed looking into the proposed course offerings for next year which would be Bio Tech, Robotics, Engineering the Future.  

Brian Day brought up that space at JHS is a problem, and classrooms have limited space Need to look at other areas for all high schools and middle schools

 





Partnerships

 Robotics i.e mentors, sponsors, safety, space,

     Externships

The community members asked that CTE/STEM help them understand the needs and what areas of mentors, sponsors and externships that could use their help with.

Nick Alvanos asked the pondering question of, what would 1st grade thru 13th grade look like in the next years? What course titles would be available?
