Welcome & Introductions

Carl welcomed the group and introductions were made.

 

Present:

Sue Ambler, Susan Bradshaw, Terri Drayer, Dayna Eden, Curtis Takahashi, Brian Day, Bob Sotak, Carl Fender and Diane Storm recorder.

 





Minutes from March 27th meeting  

Minutes were accepted and approved.

   

Classroom Visits (Bob)

Bob offered the opportunity for advisory members to sign up for classroom visits.

Brian Day and Allison Greenberg will be in contact with those who signed up to set up visits.

 

End of Year Program Review Update (Carl)

May 7th there will be a group to look at the report. June 19th Carl will bring the recommendations back to the advisory for review, and areas to work on.

 

Anatomy and Physiology Follow-up (Brian)

(Providence, Everett Clinic, EvCC, Lake Wa Tech, Clinician, Doctor)

Brian Day Handed out a scope and sequence plan for the committee to help facilitate in bringing a rich experience into the classroom. Brian will send out a set schedule with dates. Sue Ambler asked that there be process and producers set and thank you notes should be sent to the volunteers from the advisory committee and students. The advisory members talked about the importance of them contacting the various mentors coming in the classroom first, and Brian will work with the instructors’. Dayna Eden asked about the time comment and process. It was discussed that a time commitment would be an hour in the classroom at each school.
PT & OT and Speech, Providence Rehab


 

 

Biotechnology (Bob/Brain) - new course and enrollment

(OSPI approval and NCAA)

Bio-Tech will be taught in four sections at Jackson High School, in 2013-2014 school year.

Still looking at students’ enrollment numbers at Cascade and Everett high schools to see if the course will be offered at those two high schools. Sue Ambler felt that it should not be up to the teacher to market the programs.

       

Everett STEM Science Fair (May 29th 6pm – 8pm at JHS –Kim and students)

Kim Griggs and Andy Sevald introduced the students they brought that are in Jackson high school CTSO after school club, and share their projects and what the engineering and research class has meant to them. Students, Peter Cung, Madison Warnke, and Shruti Parikh invited the group to a fifth grade STEM Science Fair featuring experiments, engineering competition and a showcase celebrating fifth grade work. The advisory was invited to be judges at this event.

 

End of Year Celebration (May 30th 5pm – 7pm at JHS - Carl)

Carl reminded the group of CTE/STEM celebration event. An invitation was given to the advisory group on the fliers that the students handed out.

 

CTSO Update (Brian & Carl  Engineering Research (Bob/Brian)  

TSA – 21 students attending Nationals in Florida

 DECA – 16 students attending Nationals in California

 Robotics – 29 students and 4 chaperones attending Nationals in Missouri

 

Carl had a discussion with the group about the cost of sending student to these events.

Robotics expenses for instructors and chaperones to take students around 9,000

DECA expenses for instructors to take students around 7,000

TSA expenses for instructors to take students around 6,000

Dollar amounts vary with the number of students and chaperones’ attending.

Expenses cover hotel, flights meals etc for each chaperone and instructor that

attend competition with students.

Next meeting there will be more discussion on expenses for travel and transportation.
