Subject: NJROTC and Sea Perch Submitted by: C Fender
Strategic Target: 1.2a, 1.2b, 5.4b
Everett’s Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corp (NJROTC) is starting their third year of an underwater robotics program called Sea Perch designed as a gateway to further study careers in robotics, engineering, marine science and more? The Sea Perch program is an innovative underwater robotics program that builds an underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) sponsored and supported by the Office of Naval Research. The program provides students the opportunity to learn about robotics, engineering, science, and mathematics while building an underwater ROV as part of a science and engineering technology curriculum. Throughout the project, students will learn engineering concepts, problem solving, teamwork, and technical applications.
To facilitate the implementation of the program, grants are offered from the Office of Naval Research that equip classrooms with 10 build kits and one tool kit, for a cost of $2,000.00. Students learn important engineering and design skills and are exposed to the exciting careers that are possible in naval architecture and naval, ocean, and marine engineering. This has proven to be a highly anticipated part of the curriculum for the Naval Science One course (first-year cadets), each year.
