Mathematical Thinking
Counting
Numbers to 10 (before, after, between, greater, less, what comes next)
Introduce 10 Frames – use model to counting days, etc.
Use number line – count on, count back
Estimate before counting (How many students will be absent this week? How many will
buy milk today?)
Guess My Rule
Focus: People (attributes and characteristics)
Calendar – what do we use a calendar for?
Today is…
Month order (chants, 30 day poem, etc.)
Year long calendar – how many months in a year? Identify months with vacations, etc.
Discuss weekends
Daily Schedule
What’s happening in our day?
Weather
Identify elements of a graph
Graph data on a pictograph or display on a chart
Measurement (includes daily schedule, calendar, coins, vocabulary such as how much
longer/shorter, taller, heavier/lighter, etc)
Mark and compare heights
Intro a penny – identify and count by ones
Directly compare length, weight or capacity of objects in the room
