First Grade Classroom Routines
Suggestions for April/May
Counting
Numbers to 100 (before, after, between, greater, less, what comes next, skip counting by
10’s)
10 Frames – students model equations to 10 or higher if appropriate, place value (more
than one frame)
Use number line – count on, count back, how many more…?
Estimate before counting (How many students will be absent this week? How many will
buy milk today?)
Guess My Rule
Focus: Students working in groups. One student selects an item and others ask year or no
questions
Calendar
Write incredible equations using the date
Review all calendar skills and questions
Daily Schedule
Ask “how long” questions (what can you do in 1 minute, 5 minutes?)
Estimate: How long do you think 1 minute is? Raise your hand when you think it’s past.
Weather
Compare graphs from previous months
Discuss seasons
Measurement (includes daily schedule, calendar, coins, vocabulary such as how much
longer/shorter, taller, heavier/lighter, etc)
Intro a quarter – identify and count by twenty-fives
Directly compare length, weight or capacity of objects in the room
Quick Surveys
