Use of Sunscreen in Schools

- Senate Bill 5404 Sun Safety Act, chapter 28A.210 RCW provides the permission for any
person, student, parent, staff member may possess topical sunscreen products to help
prevent sunburn while on school property, at a school-related event or activity, or at
summer camp.

- Sunscreen is not considered a medication but a personal use item.

- Schools are encouraged to educate students about sun safety guidelines. f. This takes effect immediately
II. Sunscreen Safety Steps
a. Assess student for allergy to paba (an ingredient in most sunscreen products) by
verifying with parent/guardian student has used the product with no rashes.
